Gene that causes a form of deafness discovered

ScienceDaily (Sep. 30, 2012) ? Researchers at the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center have found a new genetic mutation responsible for deafness and hearing loss associated with Usher syndrome type 1.

These findings, published in the Sept. 30 advance online edition of the journal Nature Genetics, could help researchers develop new therapeutic targets for those at risk for this syndrome.

Partners in the study included the National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Kentucky.

Usher syndrome is a genetic defect that causes deafness, night-blindness and a loss of peripheral vision through the progressive degeneration of the retina.

"In this study, researchers were able to pinpoint the gene which caused deafness in Usher syndrome type 1 as well as deafness that is not associated with the syndrome through the genetic analysis of 57 humans from Pakistan and Turkey," says Zubair Ahmed, PhD, assistant professor of ophthalmology who conducts research at Cincinnati Children's and is the lead investigator on this study.

Ahmed says that a protein, called CIB2, which binds to calcium within a cell, is associated with deafness in Usher syndrome type 1 and non-syndromic hearing loss.

"To date, mutations affecting CIB2 are the most common and prevalent genetic cause of non-syndromic hearing loss in Pakistan," he says. "However, we have also found another mutation of the protein that contributes to deafness in Turkish populations.

"In animal models, CIB2 is found in the mechanosensory stereocilia of the inner ear -- hair cells, which respond to fluid motion and allow hearing and balance, and in retinal photoreceptor cells, which convert light into electrical signals in the eye, making it possible to see," says Saima Riazuddin, PhD, assistant professor in UC's department of otolaryngology who conducts research at Cincinnati Children's and is co-lead investigator on the study.

Researchers found that CIB2 staining is often brighter at shorter row stereocilia tips than the neighboring stereocilia of a longer row, where it may be involved in calcium signaling that regulates mechano-electrical transduction, a process by which the ear converts mechanical energy -- or energy of motion -- into a form of energy that the brain can recognize as sound.

"With this knowledge, we are one step closer to understanding the mechanism of mechano-electrical transduction and possibly finding a genetic target to prevent non-syndromic deafness as well as that associated with Usher syndrome type 1," Ahmed says.

Other researchers involved in the study include Thomas Friedman, PhD, and Inna Belyantseva, MD, PhD, from the NIDCD; Suzanne Leal, PhD, and her team at Baylor; and Gregory Frolenkov, PhD, and his team at the University of Kentucky.

This study was funded by the NIDCD, the National Science Foundation and the Research to Prevent Blindness Foundation.

Cassidy: Apple's Woz is headed for Australia -- eventually

Click photo to enlarge

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak says he wants to live Down Under. (Photo by Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images for VES)

The thing you have to know about Woz is that you just never know about Woz.

Yes, Apple (AAPL) co-founder Steve Wozniak is planning to become an Australian citizen and move to Australia. Or New Zealand. Eventually.

"I think it's sort of a neat idea," he said when I reached him Thursday.

Sure. Neat. Move to the other side of the world. Live in an up-until-now-foreign country. Why not?

But that's the thing about Woz and that's why he's come to personify the heart and soul of Silicon Valley. His mind is brilliantly analytical when it comes to technology. Think Apple 1 and Apple II. And yet, when it comes to living, he can still look at life with wonder and amusement.

"It's like a whole new second chance for me to learn about another country's history, to become rooters for their teams," Woz said. "It's sort of fun."

And hey, once you've done "Dancing with the Stars," you can pretty much do anything.

The thing is, Woz told me, he's always liked Australia. The people are nice. It seems a place far away, he said, from the hustle and bustle and the tensions and worries of the United States. (Even if it must have the hustle and bustle and the tensions and worries of Australia.)

Yes, Woz's (eventual) move is the perfect Internet story and it took the Internet

by storm. And while Woz is a big believer in the Internet (surprise), he had to chuckle at reports that he was moving to take advantage of Australia's superior broadband service (not that he doesn't think the superior broadband down under is swell).

Of course, that's not the reason. Everybody knows Woz and his wife, Janet, are moving to Australia because it's a day earlier there, which means Apple products are released there hours before the doors open to the Apple stores in California.

OK, that's not really the reason they're moving but it's a nice perk.

"Australians get things like the newest iPhone, they get them first in the world. I beat California by 17 hours this year," said Woz, who picked up his iPhone 5 while in the country on business and to file the first batch of paperwork to be granted an Australian resident visa.

Ah, paperwork. This is a bit of a process, and Woz said he's in it for the long haul. He said it could take several years to cross all the t's, dot all the i's and carry out various requirements. Once he obtains citizenship, he might choose to live in New Zealand, he says, because it's pleasant and accepts Australian citizens. But really, he said, it's a little early to be nailing down all the details.

A few things, meantime, won't change. He'll continue working for Fusion-io, where he is chief scientist. He wants to keep his U.S. citizenship. And he plans to be a regular in Silicon Valley no matter what country he calls home.

"I actually love my house in California," he said. "I hope that I can keep the house I have now, or at least a house in California, always."

And for Woz fans, who are legion, that may be the best news of all.

Interview with Max Starkov, President & CEO of - HeBS Digital

Interview with Max Starkov, President & CEO of HeBS Digital, on the hot topic of the emerging role of the community manager in hospitality.

Masha Polshinskaya, Senior Project Manager ? Hospitality Worldwide, Cleverdis: There has been much discussion about the need for social media to be managed at the property level by a new breed of employee focused solely on social media. How would you define the role of such a ?community manager? at the hotel?

Max Starkov: Social media is a customer engagement channel and a customer-service channel, and not a distribution channel. The role of the social media marketer is already evolving to better reflect the hard-learned realization of the role social media should play in travel and hospitality. The ?owner? of the hotel social media profiles?the one who manages and is responsible of posting, monitoring and reacting to customer comments?is also evolving and is being transitioned from outside social media agencies and PR agencies to property-based social marketing coordinators and community managers.

The customer engagement side of social media at the hotel means branding and marketing engagements and requires involvement by the hotel sales and marketing team and perhaps an outside PR or digital marketing agency. The customer service side of social media requires the services of a new type of social media-savvy employee or a team of employees who are able to monitor and react to customer service-related social media engagements 24/7. In other words: I see a dual role at the property:

  • One that is more branding and marketing engagement-focused and could be handled by someone within regular business hours
  • One that is strictly customer service-related and should monitor social media and customer review postings 24/7

In addition, I have noticed that the industry does not make a clear distinction between the two media formats in question here: social media and customer reviews. Even though they both fall into the realm of user-generated media, there are clear distinctions between the two.

Social Media:

There is no doubt that social media has changed how travel consumers research and plan travel, access travel information, and perceive credibility of information. Internet users are increasingly influenced by social networks and peer reviews. By utilizing a comprehensive social media strategy, hoteliers can create social media ?buzz,? target receptive audiences, and stimulate hotel website visits, interactions and bookings, as well as instantaneously resolve arising customer service issues.

Customer Reviews:

We see more and more hotel customers using the hotel Facebook wall or Twitter profile to communicate their customer service frustrations, in many cases in real time: ?There is no hot water in my room!? or ?The lights are out in the bathroom,? etc. In other words, there is a convergence of customer reviews and social media, which exacerbates the situation even further and creates the need for hoteliers to monitor their social media profiles and customer review sites in a 24/7 fashion.

Traditionally, customer reviews on TripAdvisor, the OTA sites and more recently on major hotel brand websites have been reactive i.e. post-stay. Lately, we see more and more ?real-time? reviews where customers are posting reviews during their hotel stays, especially disgruntled guests. All of this necessitates the 24/7 monitoring and reacting to customer reviews, especially negative ones, which should be addressed and resolved as soon as possible.

Cleverdis: Why is social media not a distribution channel? Many hospitality marketers would claim otherwise.

Starkov: In my view, hoteliers that are still trying to use social media as a distribution channel are the ones trying to find some kind of meaningful ROI to justify their efforts. Smart hoteliers understand that social media is not a distribution channel in hospitality and therefore use a different set of metrics to gauge success.? Despite the monumental efforts by many hotel marketers in the past five years to use social media as a ?new and revolutionary? distribution channel in hospitality and travel, they all failed miserably. Today the social scene is littered with the abandoned corpses of hotel and other travel-related profiles.

Why?? Because a distribution channel is primarily a one-way street: the owner or aggregator of travel inventory/information pushes inventory/information through distribution channels which have been accepted by interested parties such as the traveling public, travel agents, group planners, etc. These distribution channels have been incorporated in travel planning technology and marketing solutions like GDS, travel supplier sites, OTA sites, etc.

Social media is not a one-way street. It is a multi-street maze of peer-to-peer, marketer-consumer and consumer-marketer engagements and relationships.

In other words, in travel and hospitality, social media is a customer engagement channel and a customer service channel, not a distribution channel. Hoteliers should use the same performance indicators they apply to customer service and branding initiatives.

Cleverdis: What would your social media strategy be for 2013?

Starkov: I would do everything possible to bring social media management and customer review monitoring in-house and at the property level. I would create internal social media management and customer review monitoring processes, preferably in the following manner:

Social Media Profiles on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.:

Services provided by an outside agency

I would hire an outside agency to provide best practices and train my staff with quarterly guidelines and concrete ideas regarding social media postings, contests, sweepstakes, etc. This agency would perform quarterly audits of my hotels? management of social media profiles and provide recommendations. This company would be in charge of designing and implementing all of the digital technology tasks: Facebook custom tabs, Facebook sweepstakes, reveal tabs and promotions, Twitter backgrounds, YouTube Channel customizations, etc.

Services I would retain in-house:

  1. Customer engagement side of social media ? For the ongoing management of the social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, etc. I would appoint a designated marketing coordinator/community manager to work as part of the Sales & Marketing Department. This community manager would monitor customer posts, manage customer engagements, post branding and marketing messages and handle questions and reviews by customers via the social media profiles during regular business hours. Any customer-related issue outside of business hours should be referred to the customer service team at the property.
  1. Customer service side of social media ? This would include monitoring and reacting to customer service-related comments, issues and complaints. Hotel employees from the client-facing staff, including designated reception/front desk managers and clerks would be in chare of these services. The goal is to have a person monitoring customer service issues during each shift, thus ensuring 24/7 ?social media? support. Once again, the 24/7 social media monitoring applies only to customer service issues that require urgent attention and immediate resolution.

Customer Reviews:

Monitoring customer reviews should be handled at the property and not by an outside agency and should be assigned to different teams similar to the social media management strategy. During business hours, this could be a marketing coordinator/community manager and after hours, specially-trained members of the front desk servicing teams (including designated reception/front desk managers and clerks).

Utilizing reputation-monitoring tools like Revinate and ReviewPro is highly recommended for efficiencies, breadth of review sites, and monitoring the comp set.

Cleverdis: What social media platform would you spend the most time on in 2013?

Starkov: To be successful in the social space you cannot focus on just one social channel. In any multichannel marketing strategy, it is important to focus your efforts across all social channels that are incorporated into your marketing mix.

In 2013 I would make sure that my property presence is optimized to the max and I am doing everything possible on the following social media platforms:

  • Facebook: for brand building and deep customer engagement
  • Twitter: for instant communications with customers and as a customer sentiment ?listening tool?
  • Google+: as an up-and-coming social network; at a minimum create and optimize the hotel profile

Updating your social channels such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ with fresh content daily harnesses the power of a successful social media strategy. The whole of these efforts is exponentially greater and more valuable than the sum of its parts.

Cleverdis: ?What?s the difference in communicating on Twitter and Facebook?

Starkov: Twitter is an open platform where hoteliers can easily search buzz surrounding their brand and reach out and engage new customers. Twitter is becoming more and more a customer service tool where hoteliers must monitor and handle feedback and requests from guests in real-time. Consider Twitter as an instantaneous communication tool. You can use Twitter in place of a short promotional email. Or in place of an SMS message. At the same time, Twitter is ?an early warning system? for service problems at the hotel. Therefore, you need to monitor tweets 24/7.

Facebook is more of a brand relationship tool for fostering customer loyalty and building a robust community of fans. Prompting fans to share photos and experiences is key in building a strong brand community and virally promoting the property in the Newsfeed. Consider Facebook as an extension to your property website, a platform which adds an interactive capability to your customer engagement strategy. Unlike the predominantly static hotel website, Facebook allows two-way conversations (marketer-customer and customer-marketer) as well as peer-to-peer engagements. Example, having one or more ?brand ambassadors? among your Facebook fans goes a long way in promoting your hotel and engaging the rest of the fans and building brand equity and loyalty.

Cleverdis: What other social media would you use?

Starkov: In this age of rich media and exploding video format, I would spend the necessary efforts and resources on enhancing and optimizing my property?s YouTube channel and Flickr profile.

I would also create 30- to 60-second videos focusing on various aspects of my hotel product: leisure travellers, meeting planners, wedding planners, family travellers, spa, etc. and use those for the hotel website, YouTube channel, Google+ Local and Bing local listings, as well as for MMS promotions.

The search benefits of Google+ are becoming vital in an SEO online strategy. The power of Google+ results in Google organic search cannot be ignored, and this growing presence in search results are turning the heads of social networks such as Twitter who used to own social search result listings.

Another social platform hoteliers should leverage in 2013 is Foursquare. Foursquare is intrinsic in socially engaging guests on a local level. Offering Foursquare check-in specials for guests is?a perfect way to up-sell onsite accommodations such as dining and spa as well as increase viral awareness.

Emerging social networks such as Instagram and Pinterest should also be on hoteliers? radar.

Cleverdis: ?What content would you put online? Where can you find it?

Starkov: One of the biggest challenges in our industry is the creation of new, original and engaging content for the hotel website, the hotel blog, email marketing, social media postings, etc.

The 2011 Google Panda Update made most hotel websites and other hotel digital content assets obsolete by introducing very strict requirements for content, interactivity, and page download speeds. The update requires hoteliers to generate engaging and unique website content (as opposed to bland, old and tired content) that would intrigue users and increase the site?s ?stickiness.? An even more recent algorithm update by Google now known as the ?Freshness? update added a strict requirement that determines how news-worthy and how current the content is on the hotel website, blog, etc.

Social media added an additional complexity to the equation. Social media users dislike pompous over-the-board content. The ?official? content ? the content that comes from the hotel in the form of website copy, blog articles, Facebook postings, etc. ? should be as close to the style and format of the ?unofficial? content or the user-generated content. The bigger the gap between the official and unofficial content, the less credible the official content is since people tend to trust their peers more than any official entity.

Hoteliers should be looking into generating good and engaging content for the social media profiles and the hotel website blog using all available sources:

  • Hotel Website?s Content Management System (CMS): does your property website CMS have the functionality to automatically push ?fresh? content in the form of specials and promotions and the latest events at the hotel or the destination to your Facebook wall, Twitter, mobile site, etc.?
  • Good copywriting skills should be a requirement for any community manager/social media marketing coordinator. This should be part of the job description and job requirements.
  • Create an internal system within the hotel for sharing ?Facebook-worthy? news, happenings, events and activities. Your in-house experts, from famous chefs to popular spa practitioners to wedding coordinators, are your biggest assets. Ask them to share their stories, best practices, case studies and recommendations. From seasonal recipes to ?How to?? advice to ?Top 10?? lists?all of these constitute valuable content worth publishing.
  • PR Agency: your contract with an outside PR agency should also include a Facebook and a blog version of any consumer-focused press release they produce. Such announcements about a hotel promotion, new amenity or service, happening at the hotel, etc. should be shorter and structured as sharing exciting news with your Facebook fans or hotel website blog readers.

Traditionally, hotel websites have been content rich vs. news rich, with descriptions and information featuring and explaining in detail every facet of the hotel business and service, from the bed linens to the capacity of a meeting room. The static content is there, but the ?fresh? content or the ?original and engaging? content is certainly lacking, and this is the main issue with current hotel websites after the latest Google algorithm updates.

Cleverdis: If you were an independent hotelier and had only 1,000 Euros, what would your online marketing strategy be? Would you use only social media?

Starkov: With only 1,000 Euros I would address social media only if everything on my website was fully optimized and functional. Is your website SEO up to par? Do you have a mobile website? How about a booking engine on both the desktop and mobile sites? Are the calendar of events and activities on the site updated? Do you send monthly email promotions to your customers? Do you have content on the site addressing all of your important and key customer segments? How about landing pages describing all aspects of the hotel product? How about content in foreign languages to address your main foreign feeder markets?

With a low budget, it is important to take full advantage of organic visibility in natural search results. I would begin optimizing all property local listings including Google+ Local, Yahoo Local Directory and Bing Local. I would optimize the TripAdvisor presence and set up free links from online directories and destination sites to the property website to boost Google rankings and your Google PageRank. Once I have optimized my presence across the web, I would take advantage of Google AdWords to launch paid search campaigns ? these could be micro-campaigns in selected feeder markets or promoting a concrete hotel special/package.

I would create an internal system to monitor customer reviews about my hotel on all important review and OTA sites, from TripAdvisor to Booking.com to Expedia. I would train my staff how to monitor customer reviews and how to react in each of the following three instances: highly negative, but true reviews; negative, but false, and highly positive reviews. I would create internal guidelines with concrete ?owners? of the process and even recommend ?official property comments? in each of the above instances.

Then and only then would I start thinking about building a social media presence, starting with the hotel fan page on Facebook, including a custom tab with the hotel logo, photos, descriptive copy, a reservation widget, an email capture widget and call-outs to the hotel website.

Here are some final quick tips for managing a robust social media strategy:

Facebook

  1. Fresh content is key to maintaining a Facebook Fan Page community.
  2. Engagement is the true measure of ROI. Engage fans with open-ended questions, fill-in-the-blanks, and trivia.
  3. Use Facebook Insights to tailor your Fan Page content. Use the power of social analytics to find out the best time of day to reach the highest number of users and what type of content is receiving the most engagement. Use this insight to shape your strategy.
  4. Let your fans shape your community. Facebook is a two-way marketing platform, and it is important to make sure you are answering all comments/questions and providing your fans with the content that inspired them to ?Like? your page.
  5. Focus on local engagement. Utilize Facebook Deals to offer check-in specials to guests. Local, social marketing is becoming strategic in resonating with key customer segments.

Blog on the Hotel Website

  1. Post fresh, unique and engaging blog articles.
  2. Host blog contests to engage customer segments. Prompt visitors to comment on a blog post to enter to win a prize/free stay.
  3. Create blog categories that target your key customer segments. Create sections tailored around Travel Tips, Specials & Packages, Dining, and other onsite amenities.
  4. Link to your Blog in highly visible real-estate on your website homepage to capture more traffic and qualified leads. Promote your blog on social channels such as Facebook, Twitter, etc.
  5. Link to your blog on your email marketing template, and highlight your latest posts in monthly email marketing pieces.

5 ideas to gain more visibility

  1. Tag relevant social media pages to gain qualified fans and followers.
  2. Favorite relevant Fan Pages on Facebook or ?List? relevant handles on Twitter to build strategic connections and visibility.
  3. Post fresh and engaging content for more visibility in newsfeeds.
  4. Link to social community profiles on your website, email template, and blog.
  5. Cross promote your social channels.

The ?Don?ts? of a community manager

  1. Don?t ignore your community. Listen. Learn. Respond.
  2. Don?t neglect your brand. Foster positive buzz, and shape the conversation to align with your persona and branding.
  3. Don?t tell your community what they want, ask them.
  4. Don?t be a bore. Engage your community with fun contests, trivia, and more. Remember social media is just that?social.
  5. Don?t isolate. Integrate your community into the comprehensive marketing mix. No community can grow on an island.

Communicate to bloggers to incite them to talk about your hotel

  1. Host blogger contests where you prompt them to write about your hotel (linking to your website) in order to be entered to win a free stay.
  2. Create a Special Package specifically for bloggers where they can stay at the hotel at a discounted price and then blog about the experience.
  3. Prompt bloggers to write guest articles for the hotel blog to give them a free ?plug? (great for reciprocal linking).
  4. Create an email list targeted specifically to bloggers so you can begin building a brand relationship and prompt them to blog about the hotel regularly. To build this list, you can host a blogger sweepstakes.
  5. Feature a ?Blogger of the Month? section on the hotel website for cross promotion (great for reciprocal linking).

Palace won't complain over naked Harry photos

LONDON (AP) ? Royal officials say they won't complain to Britain's press watchdog about naked pictures of Prince Harry partying in Las Vegas that appeared in a British tabloid.

The Sun newspaper ran the snapshots last month after they had appeared online and were reproduced around the world.

Harry's St. James's Palace office said Friday it had decided not to pursue a complaint with the Press Complaints Commission.

The palace said a complaint would be a distraction from Harry's deployment in Afghanistan, where he is serving as a helicopter pilot, and it "would not be prudent to pursue the matter further."

The decision stands in contrast to the lawsuit and criminal complaint the palace has filed in France against a magazine that ran topless pictures of Prince William's wife, Kate.

Arizona man arrested for fake grenade launcher stunt

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Police have arrested an Arizona man who filmed his 16-year-old nephew walking city streets dressed in a sheet and carrying a fake grenade launcher in an apparent bid to test police responses after the Denver theatre shooting, authorities said on Wednesday.

Michael David Turley, 39, was arrested on Monday over the making of the video, in which an unidentified narrator says he aims to "find out how safe I really am" in Phoenix following the July Denver shooting that killed 12 people and wounded 58.

The video depicts a man with a fake grenade launcher walking around a Phoenix intersection in what appears to be a blue sheet with dark material covering his head and face. The filmmaker said it took 15 minutes for police to respond.

The amateur video, filmed eight days after the Colorado shooting at a screening of a Batman movie, was broadcast on YouTube and titled, "Dark Knight Shooting Response, Rocket Launcher Police Test."

Turley was charged with knowingly giving a false impression of a terrorist act, endangerment, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and misconduct involving a simulated explosive.

He is being held in county jail on a $5,000 (3,090 pounds) bond. If convicted, he faces up to 45 months in prison, said Maricopa County Attorney's Office spokesman Jerry Cobb.

"We take something like this seriously," Phoenix police spokesman Officer James Holmes said. "It wasn't fun and games to all the people who were affected by this. We don't behave like this in this country to prove a point."

Police said officers reached the scene about three minutes after receiving numerous emergency calls from passers-by who said the person was pointing a weapon as they drove by.

The 16-year-old has not been arrested, Holmes said.

"The video told us what Turley was intentionally trying to do - creating a terrorist hoax for his own personal ideals," he said.

An attorney for Turley could not be immediately reached for comment.

US general charged with adultery, other sex crimes

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) ? An Army brigadier general who served five combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan has been charged with forcible sodomy, multiple counts of adultery and having inappropriate relationships with several female subordinates, two U.S. defense officials said Wednesday.

The defense officials spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to provide details on the case.

Brig. Gen. Jeffrey A. Sinclair faces possible courts martial on charges that include forced sex, wrongful sexual conduct, violating an order, possessing pornography and alcohol while deployed, and misusing a government travel charge card and filing fraudulent claims.

Sinclair, who served as deputy commander in charge of logistics and support for the 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan, was sent home in May because of the allegations, the officials said.

Sinclair was informed of the charges on Monday, and the next step will be an Article 32 investigation, including a preliminary hearing to determine if the matter should go to trial.

He had arrived in Afghanistan for his deployment in September 2011, but had been serving as the division's deputy commander since July 2010.

Sinclair, a trained paratrooper who has been in the Army for 27 years, was serving his third deployment to Afghanistan. He had also served two tours in Iraq, as well as a tour in the first Gulf war.

Army officials have scheduled a news conference for 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The charges were first reported by the Fayetteville Observer.

News and Society Blog-Environmental Info: Property Rights?

What is the meaning of This thorny concept was at one time largely taken for granted, as municipalities absorbed landowners real property into projects that were described as for the public good. These projects could include, for example, eminent domain seizure to construct a public parking lot.

We now see municipalities with wildly different philosophies on eminent domain.

For example, some municipalities in Upstate New York have chosen to pass industry-friendly pro-fracking statements that imply the entirety of their population are eager to have their communities changed into ubiquitous out-door factories for the sake of hydro-fracking for natural gas. Some real property owners within the municipalities have protested the secrecy used to pass these statements; many of which are passed at the whim of the town board members and without public input.

Other municipalities that may reside next door to the pro-fracking town boards may pass bans and moratoriums while attempting to gather information on the fracking process that will relate to the effect on human beings and the environment in their communities. Some real property owners say this is an infringement on their right of use of and profiting off their property. The question of property rights and what exactly they include becomes a very important issue when deciding who can do what on their property. It should be noticed however that common sense should help to provide an answer once and for all, namely that to engage in behavior that has the potential of harming our natural environment should be reseached and studied completely before any action is taken.

People who own property and want to gain revenue thereof, should be able to do so, but all property has borders, and on the other side of that border is someone elses property, which could be effected by the changes and conditions produced by the property next to it.

A little discussed matter is whether the environment, in and of itself, has rights. The very mention of this perspective is sensitive. We have ideas that range from the environment as raw material for capitlistic profit to environment as sacred.

As a nation, we seem to have been unable to discuss this matter. Profit sounds great until you find a nuclear facility next door to your home. Without fail we hear that accidents can happen but they have been regulated for. This is a wildly interesting idea. The nature of accidents is that we don't know what they will be.

For example, the Assumption Parish, Louisiana sinkhole caught everyone by surprise, is ongoing, seriously dangerous, and not broadcast to the nation. The sinkhole accident is in the process of unfolding and as of now, nobody knows what it will do. I suspect this would be the time for the good legislators of Louisiana to start legislating.

We need a serious conversation about property rights. Instead, the topic is swept under the rug as corporations and government go about their business of profit and power.

The human beings, probably more closely related to environment than to corporations/government, need to think about their wishes.

Is sameness the kiss of marital demise? ? Family Inequality

Does marriage thrive on the mystery? To hear religious marriage experts tell it (at least on the covers of their books), marriage is a mystery, the solving of which might just mean its demise. So just keep asking yourself, ?What am I doing in this marriage?? Historically, the reason so many marriages survived arguably was because divorce wasn?t an option. So the survival of marriage was due to its external environment not its internal dynamics. Now that the padlock has been blown off the door, people need reasons to stay together, if they want to. Is it the mystery that holds them together? In the debate over marriage rights and homogamous (?same-sex?) marriage, one odd issue has been the relative stability of different forms of marriage. I say ?odd? because there is no logical connection between relationship stability and civil rights, but it?s all wrapped up in the sideshow over what kind of marriage is ?good? for children. It turns out there is a whole right-wing Christian theory about gay and lesbian relationship stability, which I had naively never heard of. This came to my attention recently when Carlos Maza, a marriage rights activist, went undercover at an ?It Takes A Family To Raise A Village? conference put on by the National Organization for Marriage. One of his audio recordings reportedly featured Jenet Erickson, a conservative Christian teaching at Brigham Young University. She offered the students at her session this theory (transcribed by me), which she said she got second hand from Brad Wilcox:

I remember talking about this with Brad Wilcox and he said, he was talking about gay marriage being accepted. And I?ll just make this side comment ? we do not have enough research to say it is any kind of law, but I want to be thinking about it, keep it in your mind, because there?s something about same-gender relationships also being unstable ? they seem to be less stable just inherently. And he would say ? when we look at the Scandinavian countries that accepted gay marriage some years ago ? after people could get married as same gender couples after that period of time, when they measured how long a lesbian relationship ? and you should know those are most likely to marry, are women, right? ? how long those relationships last and the average was 18 months [someone whistles]. And so he just commented that there seems to be something ? this is the way he would say it ? that women don?t want to hang out, they?re not interesting enough, ?They?re too much like me!? He would say, women bonding with women ? it?s like there?s something about the difference between genders that allows for stability inherently, because there?s enough difference: ?I?m going to stay in this to figure you out. It may take an entire lifetime to get into your brain,? right? He had an interesting thought that I thought was a fascinating idea, that there seems to be something inherently unstable about same gender relationships. We?ve known that about gay relationships with men, but it?s also true of lesbian relationships. And why, why is it this heterosexual dynamic, inherently seems to potentially lead to greater stability. He would say, you?ve got to figure this person out.

(I couldn?t find an email address for Erickson to run this by her. But Wilcox, via email, said it was not an accurate representation of his views.) In the recent scandal over Mark Regnerus?s study, this came up as well, due to his argument that children of any parent who ever had a same-sex relationship were worse off as young adults than those of forever-married-bio-parents. In his self-defense piece, apparently forthcoming in the journal Social Science Research, he returns to the issue of relationship stability. Regnerus writes, about a ?study of Norwegian and Swedish same-sex marriages? (referring to this one in Demography) that, ?The study authors estimate that in Sweden, 30% of female marriages are likely to end in divorce within 6 years of formation, compared with 20% for male marriages and 13% for heterosexual ones.? That sounds pretty high. He omits two important sentences from the same paragraph of the paper, however:

  • ?In Norway, 13% of partnerships of men and 21% of female partnerships are likely to end in divorce within six years from partnership registration.? (Selectively not mentioning the lower rates in Norway. I don?t know where Erickson got that 18-months figure.)
  • ?These levels are higher than the corresponding 13% of heterosexual marriages that end in divorce within five years in Sweden, but not high when compared with divorce levels in the United States.? (Selectively not putting the divorce rates in context.)

My not-yet-peer-reviewed lifetable estimate of divorce rates in the U.S. puts the 6-year risk at 19%, so I?d say those Swedish homogamous-divorce rates are a little higher, at least for the first six years. (Before death does them part, I reckon 49% of U.S. marriages are headed for divorce. With rates that high, you have to wonder if there is something inherently unstable about heterogamous relationships.) The authors of that Demography article note that lesbian marriages in Scandinavia feature a high degree of similarity between spouses in terms of demographics such as age, nationality, education and income. This is ?usually assumed to enhance marital stability.?

However, some aspects of homogamy, especially in terms of economic characteristics, may be related to less-clear power structures in a couple. This situation may be conducive to a high level of dynamism in the relationship, but perhaps not to the kind of inertia that is related to marital stability.

It gets confusing trying to parse the speculation on the role of sameness and difference here. In this interpretation, sameness creates dynamism and undermines stability. On the other hand, differences associated with unequal power structures produce stability and inertia, which is good. For marriage. Is that good? In general, the research on marriage has indeed shown that difference is not good for the odds of not divorcing:

But is gender difference different? Do couples inherently need to be similar on ethnicity, age, education, religion and income but different on gender ? if they want the relationship to last?

Zampost, Professional Insurance ink deal | Times of Zambia

By GIDEON THOLE? ?

THE Zambia Postal Services Corporation (Zampost) and Professional Insurance Company have entered a one-year renewable contract which will see post offices through out the country start selling vehicle insurance policies to motorists.

Zampost postmaster general McPherson Chanda said in Ndola yesterday that the provision of insurance policies to motorists was part of his company?s strategy to create value for its customers by transforming the post office into a one-stop shop, and ensuring that customers who came to buy road tax through the Zampost and Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) agreement for example do not queue up twice.

?The provision of the sale of road tax and motor insurance selling services will make the post office the centre of consumer services and products creating a one-stop shop which grows as we embark on the quest to form more strategic business partnerships with other partners,? he said.

Mr Chanda said the response from the public was favourable and the number of motorists seeking the services was expected to increase as the quarter came to an end.

?We expect overwhelming response towards the end of this quarter because most motorists in this country have a tendency to seek these services shortly before the official quarterly deadline,? he said.

The selling of insurance services is the latest service being provided under the postal services transformation programme which was currently underway.

Last month Zampost and RTSA entered into a one-year renewable motor tax sale agreement which has started with a total of 90 post offices spread across the country?s 10 provinces.

?Motor vehicle licensing has now been made easier and more convenient because apart from paying for road licences, customers can now insure their vehicles from the nearest post office,? Mr Chanda said.

Zampost has also been providing various consumer services on behalf of the Digital Satellite Television (DSTV) and some mobile phone companies under the one-stop shop aimed at reducing costs on the part of its clients by bringing services under one roof and closer to the people.
