Loathsome NYC Mayor Calls For End To ?Shoot First? Laws

Imagine a scenario: you come home and your significant other is being sexually assaulted. The perp starts pulling out a gun. You have your gun. You have to wait for the perp to shoot first. Welcome to Michael Bloomberg?s world

(Politico) New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, one of the faces of national gun-control efforts over the last year, made a fresh case against Florida?s gun laws Sunday on the heels of the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin shooting death.

?Sadly, all the facts in this tragic case will probably never be known,? Bloomberg said in a statement.

?But one fact has long been crystal clear: ?shoot-first? laws like those in Florida can inspire dangerous vigilantism and protect those who act recklessly with guns. Such laws ? drafted by gun lobby extremists in Washington ? encourage deadly confrontations by enabling people to shoot first and argue ?justifiable homicide? later.?

Bloomberg?s comments beg the question: will he implement a policy for the NYPD which requires that they never shoot first? What if a deranged psycho mad about abortion laws is holding a child hostage with a knife? NYPD snipers should have to hold their fire till the child is cut. Imagine your own scenario. If the policy applies to private citizens then it should apply to law enforcement, too. Oh, hey, what if a wacko upset over being cited for purchasing a big sugary drink points a gun at Bloomberg: do you think Mikey wants his protective detail to wait till the nutjob shoots? What do you think, Mike? Yeah, there?s your answer.

Meanwhile, Obama?s statement is chock full of exactly the kind of calm, reasoned discourse we expect from him

The death of Trayvon Martin was a tragedy. Not just for his family, or for any one community, but for America. I know this case has elicited strong passions. And in the wake of the verdict, I know those passions may be running even higher. But we are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken. I now ask every American to respect the call for calm reflection from two parents who lost their young son. And as we do, we should ask ourselves if we?re doing all we can to widen the circle of compassion and understanding in our own communities. We should ask ourselves if we?re doing all we can to stem the tide of gun violence that claims too many lives across this country on a daily basis. We should ask ourselves, as individuals and as a society, how we can prevent future tragedies like this. As citizens, that?s a job for all of us. That?s the way to honor Trayvon Martin.

First, he?s race baiting. Unsurprising. 2nd, the patronizing call for gun control, without mentioning that perhaps Trayvon should not have assaulted Zimmerman. 3rd, Obama sure doesn?t act like we?re a nation of law, considering all he?s done to ignore, including his most recent extension of the employer mandate out a year, despite what his own signature law states. Fourth, his administration ran guns into Mexico, resulting in the deaths of at least two US federal agents and over 200 Mexican citizens: where are his statements on that? And perhaps he should look to his hometown of Chicago and see what the law abiding citizen disarmament programs have wrought.

Also, consider that his statement could be construed as being upset that the jury found Zimmerman not guilty, which means he is throwing the 6 ladies on the jury and Zimmerman under his big bus. Shameful.

Also, Zimmerman is going to get his gun back, which is making liberals nuts. Er, nuttier. Roger Simon says Obama is the biggest loser in the case. And execrable Harry Reid says that this affair isn?t over yet. Does anyone think that Zimmerman could receive proper treatment and his constitutional rights in any suit brought by the DOJ when the Senate Majority Leader, along with other politicians, make statements against Zimmerman?

Look, George Zimmerman may have gotten away with murder, or a lesser charge that could have resulted in a jail sentence. Or may not have gotten away with anything. The fact remains that there were not enough pieces of physical evidence to convict. Had the prosecution gone with a lesser charge to start, perhaps he might have been found guilty. But Obama is right about one thing: we are a nation of laws, not a nation of men, and it was up to the government to prove their case. They didn?t. They couldn?t. So, no matter what our feelings are about the case, we can?t let them get in the way of Lady Justice, who is blindfolded for a reason. I?m sure all those people who are protesting based on their feelings would want to be accorded the same measure of Law if they ever got in trouble.

DAVID FLORES: Roosevelt's Carroll first black NEISD head football coach

Roosevelt High School football coach Matt Carroll didn't set out to make history. It just worked out that way.

?

But make no mistake: Carroll, 41, doesn't take the significance of his hiring lightly.

?

When he got the job at Roosevelt in mid-March, Carroll quietly broke through a barrier by becoming the first African-American head football coach in the 63-year history of the North East Independent School District.

?

"I didn't think a whole lot about it initially, but people have brought it up as I've gone into the community," Carroll said. "I know it's important to some of them. The kids may see that more, too. I'm here to motivate all our kids, but I think it's important that they see someone like me can get there and do the job."

?

Carroll, who grew up in West Texas and graduated from Andrews High School, was head coach at Waco University High School for five seasons before succeeding Neal LaHue at Roosevelt. The Trojans went 20-32 and made the playoffs once under Carroll.

?

"It was a great thing to see Matt get the Roosevelt job," said Brackenridge coach Willie Hall, one of seven African-American head football coaches in Greater San Antonio. "Black kids notice when somebody that looks like them gets that position, and they talk about it. As the saying goes, seeing is believing.

?

?It?s like when Obama became president. It opened a lot of doors for a lot of kids in different ways. The mental aspect of something like that is very important. It can?t be overstated.?

?

Roosevelt?s enrollment during the past school year was 57.3 percent Hispanic, 18.6 percent African-American and 15.5 percent white.

?

?

Carroll former Roosevelt assistant coach

?

Even though Carroll was born in Denver City near the Texas-New Mexico border, his hiring at Roosevelt was a homecoming of sorts. He began his career at the school on Walzem Road as an assistant under Bryan Dausin in 1995, when the Rough Riders won the 5A Division II state title.

?

?I?ve told our kids now that I was fortunate to be here back then,? Carroll said. ?Some of the players on the ?95 team still call me. It was a very special group and we developed everlasting relationships.?

?

Carroll coached the running backs at Roosevelt for 11 seasons, the last nine when Glenn Hill was head coach, before going on to a two-year stint as offensive coordinator at Reagan.

?

When LaHue resigned at Roosevelt in mid-February to become head coach at Hays, Carroll became the popular choice to succeed him. ?

?

?Roosevelt has always been home to me,? Carroll said. ?This is where I want to be. That?s made the transition easier for me. I?ve always wanted to work in the North East district because of the emphasis it puts on academics and athletics. Coaches are held to a different standard. I feel that I have an opportunity to make a difference at Roosevelt. That?s what intrigued me about the job.?

?

Carroll and his wife, Dawn, have two sons, Bryson, 14, and Brennan, 7. Bryson will be a freshman quarterback at Roosevelt this season.

?

Carroll applied for a promotion at Roosevelt when Hill resigned in 2006 to take the head-coaching job at Conroe Caney Creek, but LaHue got the nod and Carroll left to join David Wetzel?s staff at Reagan.

?

?I hadn?t ever been a head coach, so I knew I had to go outside the district and get a head-coaching job,? Carroll said.

?

His opportunity came at Waco University in 2008. The Trojans had their best season under Carroll in 2009, when they went 7-5 and reached the second round of the 4A Division II playoffs.

?

?

Dausin: Carroll 'a great?fit' for Roosevelt community?

?

Carroll praised longtime NEISD athletic director Jerry Comalander for giving him the opportunity to head the Roosevelt program. Besides being head football coach, Carroll is also the school?s athletic coordinator. ??

?

?Any success the North East district has in athletics starts with Coach Comalander because of all the good things he does for the entire athletic program,? Carroll said.

?

Dausin and Hill were among the first to congratulate Carroll when he got the job at Roosevelt.

?

"He is a great fit for that community," said Dausin, a Roosevelt graduate who is now head coach at Warren in the Northside ISD. "He understands the dynamics. More importantly, he brings all that tradition he helped establish when he coached at Roosevelt.

?

"Matt can get along with a lot of different people and he cares about kids, works very well with kids. He has a great disposition and is a great people person. He's a hard worker and knows what he wants to do. I'm very proud of him."

?

Hill, who was Dausin's defensive coordinator at Roosevelt before succeeding him as head coach, also was ebullient in his praise of Carroll.

?

"I'm very hesitant to use the word 'proud' because it sounds like I've had more to do with his success than I really have," said Hill, now head coach at Churchill. "But he is a great person and he was a huge part of the success we had at Roosevelt. He was truly my right-hand man.

?

"I never used the title assistant head coach, but he filled that role for me. He took on some responsibilities and did a great job. I knew he was going to be a successful head coach. I'm proud of his work ethic, proud of his character. He does things the right way."

?

Carroll expressed his gratitude to both Dausin and Hill.

?

"I learned so much from Coach Dausin and Coach Hill," Carroll said. "Not only about football, but how to treat kids."

?

?

College coach a father figure to Carroll

?

Carroll and his twin, Mike, were the youngest of nine children born to Mae and A.J. Carroll, who farmed for a living near Seminole.

?

?We lived out in the country,? Carroll said. ?I started working in the fields when I was a kid. I was only 10 when I learned how to drive an International D-17 tractor. All we knew was work. My dad was a perfectionist. The crops we had was what we made a living on. There was no room for error.

?

?I think about that mentality as a coach now and what we do on the football field. I always tell our kids that it translates to the real world. They?re going to have a job one day. If you mess up as a football player, it will cost you playing time. But if you mess up in life, it will cost you your job.?

?

Carroll was only 11 when his father died of complications from diabetes at age 45 in 1984.

?

?My mom was a single mom and we struggled through a lot of hard times,? Carroll said. ?But she did a great job of raising us.?

?

A standout running back at Andrews, Carroll played college football at Hardin-Simmons under Jimmie Keeling. It didn?t take long for Keeling to become a father figure to Carroll.

?

?He stepped into that role,? Carroll said. ?My mother did everything she could as a single mother, but coaches have always played a big part in my life. They bridged that gap that was missing. I became very close to Coach Keeling and I still talk to him often.?

?

First as a player and then a coach, Carroll found his calling on the football field.

?

?There was no doubt about what I wanted to do for a living,? Carroll said. ?I wanted to do the same thing for kids that my coaches did for me. I want to get up every day and try to make a difference in their lives.?

?

Welcome home, Coach Carroll.

Zimmerman jury to begin 2nd day of deliberations

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? The jury in George Zimmerman's murder trial is set to begin a second day of deliberations on Saturday, weighing whether the neighborhood watch volunteer committed a crime almost a year and a half ago when he fatally shot Trayvon Martin.

As the jury began their discussions Friday afternoon, police and civic leaders in this Orlando suburb went on national television to plead for calm in Sanford and across the country, no matter what the verdict.

"There is no party in this case who wants to see any violence," Seminole County Sheriff Don Eslinger said. "We have an expectation upon this announcement that our community will continue to act peacefully."

During closing arguments, the jury heard dueling portraits of the neighborhood watch captain: a cop wannabe who took the law into his own hands or a well-meaning volunteer who shot Martin because he feared for his life.

Zimmerman's lawyers put a concrete slab and two life-size cardboard cutouts in front of the jury box in one last attempt to convince the panel Zimmerman shot the unarmed black 17-year-old in self-defense while his head was being slammed against the pavement.

Attorney Mark O'Mara used the slab to make the point that it could serve as a weapon. He showed the cutouts of Zimmerman and Martin to demonstrate that the teenager was considerably taller. And he displayed a computer-animated depiction of the fight based on Zimmerman's account.

He said prosecutors hadn't met their burden of proving Zimmerman's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Instead, he said, the case was built on "could've beens" and "maybes."

"If it hasn't been proven, it's just not there," O'Mara said. "You can't fill in the gaps. You can't connect the dots. You're not allowed to."

In a rebuttal, prosecutor John Guy accused Zimmerman of telling "so many lies." He said Martin's last emotion was fear as Zimmerman followed him through the gated townhouse community on the rainy night of Feb. 26, 2012.

"Isn't that every child's worst nightmare, to be followed on the way home in the dark by a stranger?" Guy said. "Isn't that every child's worst fear?"

One juror, a young woman, appeared to wipe away a tear as Guy said nothing would ever bring back Martin.

The sequestered jury of six women ? all but one of them white ? will have to sort through a lot of conflicting testimony from police, neighbors, friends and family members.

Jurors deliberated for three and a half hours when they decided to stop Friday evening. About two hours into their discussions, they asked for a list of the evidence. They will resume deliberations Saturday morning.

Witnesses gave differing accounts of who was on top during the struggle, and Martin's parents and Zimmerman's parents both claimed that the voice heard screaming for help in the background of a 911 call was their son's.

Zimmerman, 29, is charged with second-degree murder, but the jury will also be allowed to consider manslaughter. Under Florida's laws involving gun crimes, manslaughter could end up carrying a penalty as heavy as the one for second-degree murder: life in prison.

The judge's decision to allow the jury to consider manslaughter was a potentially heavy blow to the defense: It could give jurors who aren't convinced the shooting amounted to murder a way to hold Zimmerman responsible for the killing.

To win a manslaughter conviction, prosecutors must show only that Zimmerman killed without lawful justification.

O'Mara dismissed the prosecution's contention that Zimmerman was a "crazy guy" patrolling his townhouse complex and "looking for people to harass" when he saw Martin. O'Mara also disputed prosecutors' claim that Zimmerman snapped when he saw Martin because there had been a rash of break-ins in the neighborhood, mostly by young black men.

The defense attorney said Zimmerman at no point showed ill will, hatred or spite during his confrontation with Martin ? which is what prosecutors must prove for second-degree murder.

"That presumption isn't based on any fact whatsoever," O'Mara said.

In contrast, prosecutors argued Zimmerman showed ill will when he whispered profanities to a police dispatcher over his cellphone while following Martin through the neighborhood. They said Zimmerman "profiled" the teenager as a criminal.

Guy said Zimmerman violated the cornerstone of neighborhood watch volunteer programs, which is to observe and report, not follow a suspect.

Zimmerman's account of how he grabbed his gun from his holster at his waist as Martin straddled him is physically impossible, Guy said.

"The defendant didn't shoot Trayvon Martin because he had to; he shot him because he wanted to," Guy said. "That's the bottom line."

But to invoke self-defense, Zimmerman only had to believe he was facing great bodily harm, his attorney said. He asked jurors not to let their sympathies for Martin's parents interfere with their decision.

"It is a tragedy, truly," O'Mara said. "But you can't allow sympathy."

With the verdict drawing near, police and city leaders in Sanford and other parts of Florida said they have taken precautions for the possibility of mass protests or even civil unrest if Zimmerman, whose father is white and whose mother is Hispanic, is acquitted.

There were big protests in Sanford and other cities across the country last year when authorities waited 44 days before arresting Zimmerman.

About a dozen protesters, most of them from outside central Florida, gathered outside the courthouse as the jury deliberated. Martin supporters outnumbered those for Zimmerman.

Here's Some Good News About China, the Environment, and California

Cooperation between the world's most populous country and the U.S.'s most populous state yields a bit of cheer.

OK, there is plenty of bad news on all three of those fronts, and this development goes only so far. But it's positive, and it's creative -- and, from my parochial perspective, it also ties together a variety of strands I've been following for a long time. So, here goes:

The Environmental Defense Fund recently drew attention?to a program to establish a carbon-trading market in Shenzhen -- the same factory-dense hub of activity in Southern China I've written about repeatedly over the years. (Sample of early report; sample of later one; sample in between.) From the EDF statement:

Shenzhen, an economically-vibrant city of 15 million on the South China Sea, launched the first of seven Chinese regional pilot carbon market systems slated to begin by the end of 2014.

The Shenzhen market is set include at least 635 local companies that contribute approximately 40% of the city's CO2 emissions, and is expected to result in a 21% decrease in the carbon intensity of the economy in just two years. ?Shenzhen is one of seven carbon trading pilots that represent about 25% of China's GDP and may include thousands of companies emitting hundreds of millions of tons of CO2.

This is good in many ways: As an example of the typical Chinese "try a bunch of experiments, and then do more of what works" governing strategy. As one more sign of the type of international cooperation that matters more than any other on climate issues, joint efforts between the U.S. and China. As an illustration of the Shenzhen area's rapid evolution?out of the low-wage, low-value-added, dirty-job economic model. As evidence that the Chinese government recognizes that "sustainability" in all its aspects is the very greatest challenge to the country's continued development and even the regime's survival.?

And to me it is gratifying in one other way too: Apparently it reflects the fruits of environmental-cooperation efforts between China and California, and specifically the trip to Shenzhen and other cities that?Governor Jerry Brown of California happened to be taking the day after I finished interviewing him for my profile last month. The Shenzhen project and the larger program of which it is part are deliberately modeled on some of the environmental measures that Brown has pushed in California during both his first and his second incarnations as governor.?

As I was finishing my last interview with Brown in his downtown Oakland office, the next person who trudged up to the third-floor loft to see him was ... Liam Casey! This is the same manufacturing mogul of Shenzhen whom I have often used as a guide to that landscape. Here is a picture of him coming in to Brown's office.

Casey announced in a Tweet today that the Shenzhen announcement was the culmination of work done during the California delegation's visit to China in April. Let's take our good environmental and US-China news where we can find it and recognize this step.

Andrei Kirilenko / NBA free agent update: Nets are all in, and then some

CBSSports.com NBA Insider Ken Berger confirmed a report from the New York Post that the Nets have reached an agreement with forward Andrei Kirilenko on a two-year deal for the mini-mid-level exception on Thursday. Kirilenko, 32, scored 12.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game lasts season with the Timberwolves in his first season after spending the 2011-12 season playing in Russia.

Analysis: Kirilenko opted out of his final year with Minnesota for $10 million to sign a discounted deal with the Nets and fellow Russian owner Mikhail Prokhorov. Kirilenko will likely split minutes with Paul Pierce next season, which will likely his hurt his Fantasy value. For now, consider him in the mid-to-late rounds in most formats on Draft Day.

The Nets were said to have signed Andrei Kirilenko to a two-year contract after talks with Bojan Bogdanovic and Kyle Korver fell through.????

Microsoft reboots with sweeping reorganization

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Microsoft Corp. has decided its entire business needs a new operating system.

CEO Steve Ballmer is restructuring the company to cope with a quickening pace of technological change that has left the world's largest software maker a step behind its two biggest rivals, Apple and Google.

In an effort to catch up, Microsoft is dismantling a management structure that separated the company into sometimes disjointed divisions and hatching a more cohesive product line-up. The new set up revolves around software, devices and services connecting those devices to applications stored in remote data centers ? a concept that has become known as "cloud computing."

The move comes amid a lukewarm response to the latest version of Microsoft's flagship Windows operating system and a steady decline in demand for personal computers as people increasingly rely on more convenient smartphones and tablets.

If things pan out the way Ballmer envisions, the shake-up announced Thursday will foster more rapid innovation and sharpen the company's focus on countering the threat posed by mobile devices running on software made by Apple and Google while laptop and desktop computers powered by Windows lose their luster. He is hoping a more closely-knit organization making the software and services that run smartphones, tablets, the Xbox video game console and, yes, PCs will re-establish Microsoft's reputation as "a company that helps people get stuff done."

"We are ready to take Microsoft in bold new directions," Ballmer told analysts and reporters during a conference call.

Ballmer, 57, can't afford to lose his way now. If he does, Microsoft could be even further eclipsed by its rivals. That, in turn, could disillusion investors already exasperated with the lackluster performance of Microsoft's stock since Ballmer succeeded his close friend, company co-founder Bill Gates, as CEO 13 years ago.

During Ballmer's reign, Microsoft's stock has slipped by nearly 40 percent even as the company's annual revenue has roughly quadrupled from $20 billion to nearly $80 billion. The bellwether Standard & Poor's 500 has climbed by 14 percent during the same time while Apple's stock price is nearly 17 times higher. By the time Google went public, Ballmer had already been Microsoft's CEO for four years. Since then, Google's stock has risen tenfold. Both Apple and Google now boast higher total market values than Microsoft.

Microsoft's stock gained 99 cents Thursday to close at $35.69. The shares have surged 24 percent in the past three months, partly because the company's revenue is holding up better than many analysts expected, despite five consecutive quarters of declining PC sales. Some recent buyers of Microsoft's stock had been betting the company would do something even more dramatic, such as spinning off a division or shedding its unprofitable Internet search engine, Bing, said BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis. Neither of those appears likely, now that Ballmer has reshuffled the business.

Gillis views the changes as Ballmer's tacit acknowledgement that Microsoft had become bogged down in bureaucracy and second-guessing ? and an admission that there was too much internal strife as various factions formed to protect their turf.

"We have to make the right decisions more quickly," Ballmer said. The company's motto now: "One Microsoft all the time."

Ballmer appears to have the right idea, although it would have looked even smarter had he done it shortly after it became clear that Apple's 2010 release of the iPad was reshaping the tech market, said Gartner Inc. analyst David Cearley.

"They are really reorganizing for the market reality that has been in place for the last three years," Cearley said. "It would have been nice if it was done earlier, but it's not too little too late yet. The real key is execution. All these changes make sense and I can see a path forward, but that path forward is a really rocky one."

Most of Microsoft's key executives will remain in positions of power at the Redmond, Wash., company although with new roles and more defined responsibilities. The company's new divisions include engineering, marketing and business development.

Ballmer said no layoffs are planned, although analysts believe the overhaul will open the door for cost-cutting opportunities as Microsoft pulls together its disparate parts.

Terry Myerson, who had been overseeing Windows Phone, will lead Microsoft's operating systems and engineering group, namely Windows. Qi Lu, who had been overseeing Bing, will head applications and services.

Microsoft named veteran executive Julie Larson-Green head of its devices and studios engineering group, which will be in charge of hardware development, games, music and entertainment. She had been promoted in November to lead all Windows software and hardware engineering after Steven Sinofsky, the president of its Windows and Windows Live operations, left the company shortly after the launch of Windows 8.

Tony Bates, who joined Microsoft in 2011 when the company bought video calling service Skype for $8.5 billion, will take on a key networking role as he works with the company's key business partners and preaches about the virtues of Microsoft's products and services.

Some of what Microsoft is doing mirrors changes that Apple and Google already have executed.

For instance, Apple put its iOS software for iPhones and iPads along with its operating system for its Mac computer under one executive, Craig Federighi, in a shake-up last year. And Google's Android software for mobile devices and Chrome software for laptops were aligned under the management of the same executive, Sundar Pichai, for the first time during the spring.

Now, Microsoft hopes to mimic the success of its rivals in a world that increasingly revolves around mobile devices and Internet services. Gartner estimates nearly 867 million devices running on Android software will be shipped worldwide this year, up from 505 million last year. Worldwide shipments of Windows-powered devices are expected to total nearly 340 million this year, down from 346 million last year, Gartner forecasts. But those Windows machines are primarily PCs, not smartphones or tablets. Apple will ship about 296 million iOS and Mac devices this year, up from 213 million last year, Gartner predicted.

Part of Microsoft's problem is a matter of perception. Even though it remains one of the world's most profitable companies, its stature has been steadily diminishing in tech and investment circles.

Ballmer's reorganization "should help Microsoft slow its decline, but the question remains whether it will be enough to help it climb into new markets," Forrester Research analyst Frank Gillett said.

14 Signs Your Guy Means It When He Says "I Love You" - Lovepanky

signs your guy means "I love you"

When a guy pursues a girl, all he cares about is getting her to fall for him.

He may be in love with her, he may be infatuated by her, or he may just be trying to get into her pants.

It doesn?t matter what his intentions are.

But he?d say just about anything to get the girl he likes to fall for him!

[Read: How guys fall in love with a girl ? The 7 stages of love for men]

So how can you ever tell if a guy truly loves you, or is just saying that to get you to fall in love with him or get into bed with him?

How to tell if a guy means it when he says he loves you

Unfortunately, there is no clear and easy way to know if a guy truly means it or is just saying that he loves you to flatter you or get into your panties.

But there are a few clear cues and signs he?d give away that can help you see through his words and find out if he truly loves you.

Firstly, the easiest way to know he means it when he says he loves you is by keeping his sexual innuendos in mind.

[Read: 22 big early warning signs of a bad boyfriend]

Does he try to slip his hands into your shorts as he says he loves you? He?s obviously saying it just to flatter you or impress you enough to unbutton your shorts!

The further away his first ?I love you? is from the possibility that both of you may end up in bed, the truer his intentions may be. [Read: 25 signs your boyfriend really loves you even if he doesn?t say it out loud]

Why guys say ?I love you? even if they don?t mean it

For a guy, sex is just that. It?s sex. It doesn?t always have to be attached with emotions. On the other hand, ?for a girl, sex is almost always entwined with emotions and love. And guys know that.

By promising a girl that he?s in love with her, he?s saying just what the girl wants to hear, he?s mixing sexual pleasure with the promise of emotional attachment. And when a guy does that, a girl almost always feels obligated to give in and indulge the guy?s sexual desires because ?he truly loves her!? [Read: Are you falling for the just-the-tip sex excuse?]

For a guy, it?s easy to say a few words, especially if the reward for it is sex. You?re happy, he?s happy. And everyone gets what they want, don?t they?

The 3 circumstances when a guy would say ?I love you?

When a guy dates you, there are just three possibilities when he would say that he loves you. Even if there are any other smaller reasons, they can still be summarized in these three circumstances.

#1 He wants to get into your panties. He wants to have sex with you, and he knows you?ll indulge him only if he makes some kind of a commitment first.

#2 He?s trapped into saying it. He may really like you a lot, but he?s still confused about whether he?s truly in love with you. But he says those three words because you?re forcing him into saying it *by saying you love him and waiting for him to say it back*, or worse, he feels obligated to say it because he assumes that?s what you want to hear. [Read: 10 reasons why saying ?I love you? too soon sucks for the relationship]

#3 He really does love you. He really loves you, and he means it completely when he says those three words. He could say it on the very first date or a few months down the dating lane, but he still means it with all his heart and sees you as a long term lover in his life.

Using his behavior to find out if he loves you

As a girl, you?re entitled to be cautious when a guy says he loves you. After all, what if he?s just lying and breaks your heart someday. But you need to remember that not all guys say those three loving words just to get into your panties.

It?s easier to judge his intentions depending on the kind of relationship both of you have. Actions always speak louder than words. How does he behave when he?s around you?

Is he keen to introduce you to his friends? Do you catch him staring at you when he thinks you?re not looking? Does he seem mesmerized by you? And most importantly, does he try to constantly impress you and woo you? [Read: Does he really love me? - 20 signs to know the answer instantly!]

14 signs your boyfriend really means it when he says ?I love you?

If you?re in a new relationship and your boyfriend tells you that he loves you, keep an eye on these 14 signs here. In all probability, these signs will help you find out if he really means it, or is just saying it because that?s what you want you hear from him.

#1 He says it first. There?s no pressure or need to say that he loves you, but he still says it when you least expect it *and he doesn?t expect sex in return*. He?s not forced into it and you haven?t asked him a question like ?do you love me?? He says it because he means it. [Read: When is it the perfect time to say 'I love you' for the first time]

#2 He looks into your eyes. His eyes reveal his feelings for you. He stares into your eyes tenderly and lovingly when he says that he loves you.

#3 He squeezes you. Does your boyfriend squeeze your fingers or your arm when he says he loves you? When you really care about someone and love them, you can?t help but want to wrap them really tightly in your arms.

#4 The long kiss. He says he loves you after kissing you passionately, and then he comes closer again and continues to kiss you for several more seconds. [Read: How to kiss a guy and turn him on with your passion]

#5 He holds your hands. When you?re sitting next to him, has he held your hands gently and played with your fingers or stroked them while saying ?I love you?? He may be feeling awkward or shy to say it, but his overwhelming emotions may force him to pour his heart out to you.

#6 The cozy hug. He hugs you affectionately, and kisses your neck while saying how much he loves you. Hugs, cuddles and kisses always make us weak and we can?t help but say the things we really want to say.

#7 When you least expect it. A guy who?s trying to sleep with you would say that he loves you when he thinks you?re expecting to hear it. But if a guy truly loves you, he?d say it not just when he thinks you want to hear it, but even in moments when you least expect him to say it. [Read: 25 qualities in a guy that make him a really great boyfriend]

#8 He sounds serious. The tone of his voice would reveal just how serious he is. He looks you into your eyes, and tells you matter-of-factly that he loves you. He?s not saying it to get something back in return, he?s saying it with the sole intention of letting you know that he really loves you.

#9 He looks vulnerable. A guy won?t reveal his vulnerable side to a girl if he?s just trying to get into her pants. He?d try to play it cool or act cocky instead. But if a guy really loves you, he?d reveal his vulnerable side and appear completely helpless in your arms.

When he?s confessing his feelings for you, he?d appear almost weak and he?d talk slowly, and say ?I love you? almost in a whisper like he?s telling you a big secret that he keeps close to his heart. He may even seem like he?s overcome with emotions because he?d want you to understand just how much he means what he?s saying. [Read: 18 ways to decode his body language and find out if he loves you]

#10 Close proximity. A guy who loves you can?t hold his loving words back when both of you are all alone and sitting really close to each other. He?d want to cuddle you or kiss you, but most urgently, he?d want to tell you just how much you mean to him.

#11 When he does something special. When a guy who loves you gifts you something special to show his feelings for you, his gift will almost always be accompanied with an ?I love you?. It?s his way of showing his appreciation for you *by giving the gift* and revealing his feelings at the same time.

#12 Jealous love. Has this guy ever told you how much he loves you when you?re having a petty fight, or when he feels insecure because you?re flirting with some other guy? When a guy tries to express just how much he loves you when he?s angry, it?s a sure sign he really loves you.

After all, in that heated moment, all he wants to do is reinforce just how much you mean to him and how much it hurts him to see you with someone else. [Read: How to make your guy jealous and get his attention]

#13 He talks about the future. If he says something serious about your relationship or talks about the future together, and says that he loves you in the same sentence, that?s a good sign that he means it. He sees you in his future and that thought makes him realize just how special you are to him. [Read: 25 compliments for guys they'll never ever forget!]

#14 Your intuition. This is as simple as it gets. Your guy may not reveal all these signs here, or it may be too early in the relationship to know if he really loves you for sure. But the easiest way to trust a guy when he says ?I love you? is by following your instincts.

If you really think he means it, there?s a good chance he probably does. After all, what better way than to trust your instincts when you fall in love with someone!

[Read: The Lovepanky dating girl code all girls need to know!]

Use these 14 signs to find out if your guy really means it when he says ?I love you?. Even if you can?t see all these signs when he says he loves you, you?d surely see more than a handful. And that?s a great start to know if you mean something special to him, don?t you think?

High-tech gadgets monitor seniors' safety at home

(AP) ? It could mean no more having to check up on Mom or Dad every morning: Motion sensors on the wall and a monitor under the mattress one day might automatically alert you to early signs of trouble well before an elderly loved one gets sick or suffers a fall.

Research is growing with high-tech gadgets that promise new safety nets for seniors determined to live on their own for as long as possible.

"It's insurance in case something should happen," is how Bob Harrison, 85, describes the unobtrusive monitors being tested in his apartment at the TigerPlace retirement community in Columbia, Mo.

Living at home ? specialists call it aging in place ? is what most people want for their later years. Americans 40 and older are just as worried about losing their independence later in life as they are about losing their memory, according to a recent survey by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

Common-sense interventions like grab bars in bathrooms and taping down rugs to prevent tripping can make homes safer as seniors deal with chronic illnesses. Technology is the next frontier, and a far cry from those emergency-call buttons seniors sometimes wear to summon help.

Already, some companies are offering monitoring packages that place motion sensors on the front door, a favorite chair, even the refrigerator, and then send an alert to a family member if there's too little activity over a certain period of time. Other gadgets can make pill bottles buzz when it's time for a dose and text a caregiver if it's not taken, or promise to switch off a stove burner that's left on too long.

Researchers at the University of Missouri aim to go further: Their experiments show that certain automatic monitoring can spot changes ? such as restlessness in bed or a drop in daytime activity ? that occur 10 days to two weeks before a fall or a trip to the doctor or hospital.

"We were blown away that we could actually detect this," said nursing professor Marilyn Rantz, an aging-in-place specialist who is leading the research. She compares it to "a vital sign of my physical function."

Why would the gadgets work? That monitor under the mattress can measure pulse and respiratory patterns to see if heart failure is worsening before someone realizes he or she is becoming short of breath. More nighttime bathroom trips can indicate a brewing urinary tract infection.

A change in gait, such as starting to take shorter or slower steps, can signal increased risk for a fall. Basic motion sensors can't detect that. So Rantz's team adapted the Microsoft Kinect 3-D camera, developed for video games, to measure subtle changes in walking. (Yes, it can distinguish visitors.)

The researchers installed the sensor package in apartments at the university-affiliated TigerPlace community and in a Cedar Falls, Iowa, senior complex. On-site nurses received automatic emails about significant changes in residents' activity. One study found that after a year, residents who agreed to be monitored were functioning better than an unmonitored control group, presumably because nurses intervened sooner at signs of trouble, Rantz said.

The bigger question is whether simply alerting a loved one, not a nurse, might also help. Now, with a new grant from the National Institutes of Health, Rantz will begin expanding the research to see how this monitoring works in different senior housing ? and this time, participants can decide if they'd like a family member or friend to get those alerts, in addition to a nurse.

Rantz says embedding sensors in the home is important because too many older adults forget or don't want to wear those older emergency-call buttons ? including Rantz's own mother, who lay helpless on her floor for eight hours after tripping and badly breaking a shoulder. Rantz said her mother never fully recovered, and six months later died.

"When we started this team, I said we are not going to make anybody wear anything or push any buttons, because my mother refused and I don't think she's any different than a lot of other people in this world," Rantz said.

Monitoring raises important privacy questions, about just what is tracked and who has access to it, cautioned Jeff Makowka of AARP.

To work, the high-tech approach has to be "less about, 'We're watching you, Grandma,' but 'Hey, Grandma, how come you didn't make coffee this morning?'" he said.

Sensor prices are another hurdle, although Makowka said they're dropping. Various kinds already on the market can run from about $70 to several hundred, plus monthly service plans.

Amy Poehler Casts 'Parks And Rec' Characters On 'Game Of Thrones' (PHOTOS)

There's no secret that the writers of "Parks and Recreation" love "Game of Thrones."

The last few seasons have contained at least one reference -- "What is wrong with you today? Did they cancel 'Game of Thrones'?" -- to the popular HBO drama. And in a new interview with Time Out New York, series star Amy Poehler fantasized about how her cast from "Parks and Rec" would fit into "Game of Thrones.

"Well, come on, I would be Khaleesi [Daenerys Targaryen], of course," Poehler said referring to her character Leslie Knope. "Ben would probably be Jon Snow, because he?s so tormented. Ron would be Stannis Baratheon."

Time Out New York suggested Tammy 2 (Megan Mullally) as Ron's (Nick Offerman) Melisandre. "Yes! And Tom would be ... Uh oh, I hate to break it to Aziz [Ansari], but Tom would be, like, Theon Greyjoy, which is not good right now. Ann would be Sansa, April would be Arya, and Andy would be one of the dragons. [Laughs.]"

EW previously imagined what would happen if producers from "Game of Thrones" and "Parks and Recreation" wrote episodes of each other's shows. The results are here.

  • Leslie Knope/Daenerys Targaryen

  • Ben Wyatt/Jon Snow

  • Ron Swanson/Stannis Baratheon

  • Tammy 2/Melisandre

  • Tom Haverford/Theon Greyjoy

  • April Ludgate/Arya Stark

  • Ann Perkins/Sansa Stark

  • Andy Dwyer/Dragon

New anti-cancer compound shows promise for breast cancer

Melbourne researchers have discovered that anti-cancer compounds currently in clinical trials for some types of leukaemia could offer hope for treating the most common type of breast cancer.

The researchers, from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, found that the compounds, called BH3-mimetics, were effective in treating aggressive oestrogen receptor-positive (ER-positive) breast cancers when combined with the breast cancer drug tamoxifen in preclinical models. Approximately 70 per cent of breast cancers are ER-positive.

The research team, led by Professor Geoff Lindeman, Professor Jane Visvader, Dr Fran?ois Vaillant and Dr Delphine Merino from the institute?s ACRF Stem Cells and Cancer division, said they hoped their results would lead to clinical trials of BH3-mimetics for treating ER-positive breast cancers in the next few years.

Professor Lindeman, who is also a medical oncologist at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, said that BH3-mimetics worked by neutralising a protein called BCL-2 in cancer cells, making them more susceptible to dying. Up to 85 per cent of ER-positive breast cancers have high levels of BCL-2, which is a so-called ?pro-survival? protein that helps cancer cells to become immortal, and can help them to survive chemotherapy and other treatments.

?Drs Vaillant and Merino looked at the effect of adding BH3-mimetics to the standard hormone treatment, tamoxifen, used for a subtype of ER-positive cancers called luminal B cancers, which had high levels of BCL-2,? Professor Lindeman said. ?They found that a BH3-mimetic called ABT-199/GDC-0199 improved the effectiveness of hormone therapy by stopping or delaying the growth of these aggressive tumours. In one of the tumour models, the combined treatment caused complete disappearance of the tumour, while standard treatment had only a partial and unsustained benefit.?

Professor Visvader said there was a need to improve treatments for luminal B breast cancers, which are a more aggressive type of ER-positive breast cancer, associated with a poorer prognosis. In the study, the researchers used preclinical models of breast tumour samples donated by Melbourne women undergoing cancer surgery to understand how real human cancers would respond to the treatment.

?We are excited by these results and what they could mean for women with breast cancer,? Professor Visvader said. ?ER-positive breast cancers are the most common type of breast cancer, so even a small improvement could have a substantial impact if more effective upfront treatment could prevent relapse,? she said. ?It is very early days, however, and the findings will need to be rigorously tested in clinical studies.?

A landmark discovery in the late 1980s by Walter and Eliza Hall Institute scientists that BCL-2 promoted cell survival fuelled more than two decades of global research that has culminated in the design of BH3-mimetics. The investigational compound, ABT-199/GDC-0199, was discovered by scientists at Abbott (now AbbVie) and is currently being developed by Genentech, a member of the Roche group, and AbbVie.

Professor Lindeman said he hoped the recently established Centre for Translational Breast Cancer Research (TransBCR) could contribute to future clinical trials of the novel combination treatment. ?Australian women who donated their tumour samples for research helped make this discovery possible,? he said. ?It would be great to see Australians among the first to benefit from clinical trials, should they proceed.?

The research, published today in the journal Cancer Cell, was supported by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council, Victorian Government, Australian Cancer Research Foundation, National Breast Cancer Foundation and Qualtrough Family Bequest.

A young lady?s Samsung Galaxy S3 explodes and catches fire in her pant pocket

It was just another day at work for the 18 year old Swiss Fanny Schlatter, when all of a sudden she heard an explosion and could smell something funny. To her horror her cellphone, a Samsung Galaxy S3 had exploded in her pants and had caught fire. The flames were high enough to reach her shoulder, fortunately the young Swiss woman?s life was spared by her boss?s timely action who ripped her pants. Fanny survived the horrendous ordeal with second and third degree burns to her thigh.

She has taken a sick leave till mid-August to recuperate from the wounds and also filed a complaint against Samsung. Though rare such incidences are very scary as millions of us use smartphones, we keep them next to our bed when we are asleep, on the dashboard when we are driving and we even carry them on planes and trains. Usually the battery is blamed as the cause in such incidences but it will be interesting to see how the story develops further.

Two months back a Redditors Galaxy S3 had caught fire in the middle of the night burning his mattress and pillows.

Increase Your Personal Development Success By Trying These Tips ...

Monday, July 8th, 2013 at 11:21 pm ?

TIP! Often, the enemy of happiness is stress. Feeling stressed can influence your mood and your body.

There are many people available who can, or claim to be able to, help you learn about yourself. Friends and paid professionals can aid you in understanding your emotions and thought processes.

TIP! Surround yourself with like-minded people. Surrounding yourself with negative people can have a poor influence on your mood and can rub off on your way of thinking.

Usually what brings your happy mood down is stress. When our minds undergo stress, this actually damages our whole body, physically and mentally. Getting rid of the stress that is in our minds is how we can think more clearly so that we can reach our goals. Allow yourself a set time during each day that you can relax and empty your mind. Having a time to refresh can give you peace and improve your self-image.

TIP! Check out a few popular books on developmental techniques that you find particularly interesting. Many of the best-selling books offer page after page of useful, and possibly life-changing, ideas and insight.

Wherever you happen to be, when a great idea strikes your brain, write it down. You could for instance carry a small notebook with you, or use an app on your phone. Record as much as you can when your idea hits so that you can flesh it out later at a more convenient time.

TIP! Be ready to write down ideas wherever you are. Carry paper and a pen around with you.

If you want to enhance your approach to self improvement, learn to be humble. When you acknowledge the insignificance of your being in comparison to the size of the universe, you will begin to realize the shortcomings of your knowledge. A humble attitude puts you in the right mindset to learn new things and develop as a human being.

TIP! Accept your limitations before engaging in personal development. Understanding that you are a minute portion of the world will help you think about your level of knowledge.

Exercising, and taking care of your physical self are important aspects of the self improvement process. Keep your brain sharp and body energetic by getting enough sleep, exercise, and having a healthy diet. This will allow you to pursue your self improvement goals more wholeheartedly. It may seem simple, but sometimes the simplest things in life are actually the most difficult.

Tell other people positive things. If you treat other people with kindness, you will be more likely to treat yourself with kindness too.

TIP! Increasing the complex carbs in your diet can help manage depression. Without adequate complex carbohydrates, your body may burn too quickly through serotonin.

Write a pep talk about yourself. Take a small sheet of paper and write down every positive attribute you possess. Have it with you at all times, and look at it when you want some inspiration. Take it a step further and record yourself reading your list. How will this help with your self improvement?

TIP! No matter what your personal development goals are, there is one thing you need to do. No matter what other steps you take, the one critical decision you must make is to be active in your life, not a bystander.

Do you find yourself consuming alcohol far too often? Are nicotine or other destructive habits something that harms you? Our body is a temple, and therefore it should be treated like one. Deleting harmful patterns and obsessions will undoubtedly lead to an improved standard of living. Look at how you are living your life, and check if you are participating in any negative habits that should be eliminated.

TIP! When you start missing your self-made goals and guidelines, that?s a sign that you need to take a moment to figure out what the problem is. Compare your goals with the goals of others that you can research online.

If you are struggling with depression, try including more complex carbohydrates in your diet. If your complex carb intake is lower than recommended, your body won?t produce enough serotonin. Aside from snacking on nuts, rice and legumes, exercising and getting enough sleep also help boost serotonin levels.

TIP! When you are faced with tough, stressful situations, learn to use your intellect more than your emotions. By learning how to remain calm during stressful situations, you have a higher chance of increasing your confidence needed for conquering any obstacle in your life.

No matter what, you must adhere to one rule. That one thing is you must choose to be an active person and live your life, not be a spectator. Being alive means learning, exploring, and forever enhancing your own self improvement.

TIP! Do not go shopping for comfort. As part of your personal development, clean up your financial matters.

You can learn to effectively handle your emotions, even during difficult situations. Once you learn how to remain calm in the midst of stress, you?ll have the confidence needed to cope with anything that happens in your life. Take a moment and focus on your breathing technique.

TIP! To live life fully, you must be willing to take some risks. People are often afraid of failure and rejection, so they avoid risks and end up feeling unsatisfied.

Pick out what you wish to do in life and go do it. You can put all the thought into it and devise a perfect plan for life but if you never put it into action, then you will not see results. Take action with the goal of realizing your dreams.

TIP! When you are trying to improve yourself, you should aim to have a high amount of self-discipline. Use self-control over your body?s desires.

Learn how to listen to others. If you are pursuing self improvement goals, this is especially true for you! Make sure you listen to yourself. If you don?t listen to your situation, you will ignore signs that you need to make changes, which impedes self improvement.

TIP! Remembering to listen is as important as speaking your mind. This is particularly true when you are talking about self-development.

It is very rewarding to know yourself more than other people do. Care for yourself, don?t lie to yourself, and you will be able to enjoy learning more about yourself as you go through life.
