CANNES -- James Wan continues to cement his status as the 21st century poster boy for the globally minded horror filmmaker.
With the Wan-directed Insidious topping the U.K. box office charts in its third week of release (it has grossed more than $51 million worldwide), sales for his next film, Spectre, have been hot in the hands of international buyers in Cannes. IM Global, which is selling the project at the Marche du Film, has closed major territory deals that include Icon Film Distribution in Australia, Koch Media in Germany, Gussi Films in Latin America, Top Film in Russia, Aurum Films in Spain and Momentum Pictures in the U.K.
Wan wrote the script for the supernatural thriller himself and has Nicole Kidman starring and producing through her Blossom Films banner (Rabbit Hole).
Since he and his frequent collaborator Leigh Whannell launched the Saw franchise in 2004, Wan has seen his international status grow. In Berlin three months ago, he signed an eight-picture deal with U.K.-based Icon Entertainment International to produce two horror films a year, starting with House of Horror.
Insidious, written by Whannell, was released April 1 by FilmDistrict. The $1.5 million spooker follows a couple struggling against an evil looking to claim their child.
Wan is repped by Paradigm.
