When you set up your home's wireless router, you might pick a name like "Devin's Place,"?or just?leave it as the default -- or maybe you'll use it as an opportunity to advertise your political leanings. "Voteobama," for instance, or perhaps "obamasux." OpenSignalMaps, a service that tracks and maps Wi-Fi signals, tracked routers being used for this purpose all over the country; you can?see who's waving their Obama flag in your city using their interactive map.

Their database has nearly 75 million Wi-Fi access points mapped, and somewhat surprisingly, less than a thousand of those expressed some political leaning, or at least one that mentions the President.

There is a regional bias, though it's not so strong as one might expect. New York is fairly pro-Obama:

The breakdown was more or less even when accounting for errors, such as the erroneous labeling of a Wi-Fi name as positive when it is in fact negative, and that sort of thing. Internationally, there was much more of a net positive in Obama mentions.

The blog post also contains a snapshot of Buenos Aires, where there are scores of Wi-Fi names that support the president of Argentina, Cristina?Fernandez de Kirchner, and hundreds more that may refer to her (but are just as likely, perhaps, to belong to someone named Cristina):

Of course, it is a rather rough and crude method, but fun nevertheless. No one would use it for a serious indicator of the partisan status of any particular city or region, but such highly public displays of political views are still interesting.

Ex-Senator Edwards acquitted on campaign finance charge

GREENSBORO, North Carolina (Reuters) - Former Senator John Edwards' affair and child out of wedlock derailed a political rise that put him on the Democrats' 2004 White House ticket, but the one-time trial lawyer held his head high on Thursday after a North Carolina jury delivered his most personal victory yet.

Twelve jurors in the state Edwards represented in the U.S. Senate from 1999 to 2005 acquitted him on one count of accepting illegal campaign contributions given during his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination four years ago.

U.S. District Judge Catherine Eagles declared a mistrial on five other counts because the jury was deadlocked about whether Edwards, 58, took money from two wealthy donors to keep voters from learning he was cheating on his cancer-stricken wife, Elizabeth, with a campaign videographer.

The jury's decision on the ninth day of deliberations capped a nearly six-week-long trial that included salacious testimony more befitting of a soap opera than a campaign for the country's highest political office.

Jurors heard about tawdry affair details, furtive phone calls and secret donor checks written under the guise of buying furniture, as former campaign workers and supporters painted an unflattering portrait of Edwards.

The trial's outcome marked yet another dramatic turn of events for the two-time presidential hopeful who beat a Republican incumbent senator in his first political race and became the Democrats' vice presidential nominee just six years later.

As the jury's verdict was read, Edwards, who did not testify during the trial and faced possible fines and prison time if convicted, slumped back in his seat in relief.

Later, standing in front of the federal courthouse in Greensboro, he maintained his innocence and choked up as he spoke of his affection for the 4-year-old daughter he fathered with then-mistress Rielle Hunter.

"While I do not believe I did anything illegal, or ever thought I was doing anything illegal, I did an awful, awful lot that was wrong, and there is no one else responsible for my sins," he said, flanked by his parents and 30-year-old daughter, Cate, who stood by him throughout the proceedings.

"I am responsible, and if I want to find the person who should be held accountable for my sins, honestly I don't have to go any further than the mirror. It's me. It is me and me alone."

He went on to call his child with Hunter "my precious Quinn, who I love more than any of you could ever imagine" and said he still hoped to one day help the country's poor children.

Justice Department prosecutors are unlikely to retry Edwards, but a final decision will be made in the coming days, a law enforcement source said. A department spokeswoman had no immediate comment on the jury results or what would happen next.

JURORS SURPRISE COURTROOM

The government accused Edwards of orchestrating a cover-up plot that funneled more than $900,000 from heiress Rachel "Bunny" Mellon and trial lawyer Fred Baron to Hunter and campaign aide Andrew Young, who said he once falsely claimed paternity of Edwards' love-child at the candidate's request.

Jurors found Edwards not guilty of accepting illegal campaign contributions from Mellon in 2008.

But they could not reach a unanimous decision on a similar count involving money from Mellon in 2007; two counts of accepting illegal campaign money from Baron; one count of conspiring to solicit illegal campaign funds; and one count of failing to report donor payments in excess of $2,300 as political contributions.

The defense said all along that Edwards knew nothing of the supporters' payments, which were meant as personal gifts to shield Elizabeth Edwards from her husband's indiscretions, not to influence the election.

Asked how he felt after the acquittal and mistrial, Wallace Edwards, the former senator's 80-year-old father, pointed at the smile on his face. "This says it all," he said.

Federal prosecutors likely will weigh the political risk and expense of a retrial as they decide how to proceed with a case that took an unprecedented view of what qualifies as a political contribution, said Elon University assistant law professor Michael Rich.

"I'm sure that they will spin it that a hung jury simply indicates that they had a strong case but couldn't convince a couple of reticent jurors," Rich said. "I do think we saw their strongest case, and it just wasn't enough."

Rich said Young, who received immunity as the government's chief witness, ultimately proved untrustworthy.

Jurors never heard from several other key players in the political drama. Neither Edwards nor Hunter, who lives in Charlotte with their daughter, took the stand. A spokeswoman for Hunter said she and Edwards are raising their daughter together.

Also missing from the trial were Elizabeth Edwards, who died in 2010, and the two donors whose money was at the heart of the case. Baron died in 2008, and the 101-year-old Mellon was said to be physically unable to attend.

After tedious days of deliberations that included the specter of the four alternates wearing color-coordinated shirts, the main panel of jurors surprised the judge by announcing they had reached a verdict on only a single charge.

Eagles sent the group back for more deliberations, but they soon alerted the court that further discussions would not yield a different outcome. The judge promptly declared the mistrial on the remaining five counts.

"No, you didn't reach a verdict on all the counts, and that can be frustrating," she told jurors. But, she added, "it is clear you gave this case your consideration."

Eagles later ruled she planned to wait a week before releasing the names and home towns of the jurors.

Hampton Dellinger, a North Carolina lawyer who attended the trial, said Edwards' decisions to turn down a reported plea offer and skip taking the stand had paid off.

"There's no question he drove the defense strategy," Dellinger said. "He made tough call after tough call, and it worked out for him."

Really, Facebook will survive. It?s dug in. Yes, maybe it?ll shift shapes, metamorphose into something less romantic than a social network. Without explanation, we?ll see it become a roving, hydra-like ad exchange or a mere backend to apps like Spotify and Instagram. But Facebook is a sturdy set of protocols that enjoys, with good reason, a privileged place on the Internet that it won?t soon yield.

At the same time, online media in the aggregate are having a turbulent hour. As the Facebook stock has turned leaden, so has the atmosphere around all social media. It?s an election year, just when the Web should be crackling with news and rumor and ?fact-based? analysis, as the acid-toned forensics on political blogs used to be called.? The Internet has grown metastatically since 2008. And yet where, this time around, are the viral macaca videos? Where are the ?Yes We Can? recuts? Where are the Wonkettes and FiveThirtyEights and Googling monkeys of The Note?

In fact, if you even know what Googling monkeys are, you maybe have been following digital elections for too long. No blogger in 2012 has anywhere near the authority or following of Paul Krugman or David Brooks of The New York Times. The original gangster political bloggers?Mickey Kaus, Glenn Reynolds, Andrew Sullivan, Josh Marshall?seem like old bluesmen now, playing before small audiences for love if not ?hits.? As ?love? used to be called.

The 2009 movie ?State of Play? was a buddy movie about a broken-down, ink-stained wretch?Russell Crowe?and a snippy snappy wonkette blogger, Rachel McAdam. Both of them were on the trail of a political scandal (can?t remember details of that at all) but mostly they were repartee?ing along the analog/digital divide, with the Crowe geezer sure that the underreported, girly, voice-heavy blogs were created from the rib of print and he?d do better just to drink at the problem. The McAdam tart made another kind of argument: oh yeah, something about not drinking ...

In any case, it seems absurdly dated now. No one-woman blog can dominate the top Google returns anymore. She?d have to push it through Facebook and Twitter and, by relying on those autocratic templates, she?d inevitable forfeit her ?voice.? She just would. No one is more themselves on Twitter. They?re just more Twittery.

And any facts that are ceremoniously uncovered by enterprising reporters on the Web?the blogs used to live to reveal new, highly granular facts that they claimed changed games?are typically crowd-sourced over at Twitter and no one keeps track of authorship. The idea that one reporter (either a lone-wolf old man or a whip-smart lady blogger) is going to bust open a story of malfeasance at high levels: that fantasy is not in play this election season.

What?s been happening, paradoxically, is that Twitter has its catnip and chew toys (Romney?s ?Amercia? slip was one of them) that lead to jokes, but no conceptual scoops. Facebook has its odd built-in apoliticality, because all views get the same design and play. Instead, opinion-shaping is done these days in traditional spots like op-ed pages. Or, really, on one op-ed page.

You never know, right? Ever since Russell Hoban?s 1980 novel ?Riddley Walker,? in which a return to the Iron Age came 2,000 years after a nuclear winter, it?s been nearly an article of faith that the future might look more like the past than like the Jetsons. Maybe what?s about to happen in news is a return to the Iron Age of Media.

Newspapers proliferated and profited in the 20th century so much that they created an even more prolific kind of news, digital news, which then picked them off, one by one, like a serial killer. (Times-Picayune, R.I.P.) Now what?s left is a single general-interest daily broadsheet with bureaus and national import: The New York Times. That paper prints op-ed columns, and a handful of these cover the election. So that?s what everyone reads. So much for the thousands of voices from all sides that were supposed to, and briefly did, bloom on the Internet.

However, if Google wakes up on a different side of the bed, if Twitter focuses its ideological vision or if Facebook zags instead of zigs in response to the bummer stock-price news, a different set of Web practices and users and voices might be unleashed. It happens all the time. As Mark Zuckerburg should keep in mind as he sees his company?s fortunes wax and wane: If you don?t like the Internet weather, wait a minute.
