The Nepalese army laid 53 minefields during the course of its bitter civil war

Five years after the end of the civil conflict in Nepal, the army has destroyed the last minefield in the country.

With this, Nepal becomes the second country in Asia after China to become mine-free.

Clearing the mines was a commitment of the 2006 comprehensive peace agreement.

Since the end of the conflict, mines have caused 473 casualties in Nepal - 78 of which were fatal.

With an explosion that shook the side of a mountain 2,000m (6,500ft) above the city of Kathmandu, the Nepalese army destroyed the last of 53 minefields it had been responsible for laying during the country's 10-year Maoist insurgency.

However, the remote location of many of the fields meant that the task took far longer than the 60 days first anticipated.

The explosion is a symbolic end to this side of the conflict but Nepal's political parties still have a long way to go before they secure peace.

In particular they need to agree on how to demobilise some 19,000 former Maoist soldiers.

Despite their commitment to clearing these mines, the Nepalese government is yet to sign the international Ottawa treaty banning all landmines.

Freakonomics ? Immigrants Are Getting More Education

A Brookings report shows that for the first time, the share of working-age immigrants in the U.S. who have college degrees (29.6%) exceeds the share without a high school education (27.8%). In 1980, there were more than twice as many low-skilled immigrants living in the U.S. as high-skilled ones.

The report focuses on demographic trends in the 100 biggest metropolitan areas of the country over the past 15 years. While the Southwest and Great Plains remain destinations for low-skilled immigrant labor, much of the Northeast and Rust Belt now attract more immigrants with college degrees than those without. Some highlights:

Forty-four of the 100 largest metropolitan areas are high-skilled immigrant destinations, where college-educated immigrants outnumber immigrants without high school diplomas by at least 25 percent. Most notable is the concentration of high-skilled immigrants in older industrial metro areas in the Midwest and Northeast such as Albany, Buffalo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and Syracuse. Detroit, for instance, has 144 high-skilled immigrants for every 100 low-skilled immigrants.
Immigrants? skill levels vary by metro area due mostly to historical settlement patterns and economic structures. Recent immigrants to metro areas with the fastest-growing immigrant populations have markedly lower educational attainment than immigrants settling elsewhere. In former immigration destinations, or ?gateways,? with low levels of contemporary immigration such as Detroit, and re-emerging gateways such as Philadelphia, immigrants have high levels of educational attainment. Whereas in more recent gateways such as Houston and interior California, low-skilled immigrants predominate.
Compared with their U.S.-born counterparts, low-skilled immigrants have higher rates of employment and lower rates of household poverty, but also have lower individual earnings, across all metro areas. Nearly half of immigrants with a bachelor?s degree appear to be over-qualified for their jobs.

Seniors' Medical Pot Collective Faces Opposition in California

A senior citizen ?pot collective? is facing growing criticism in a Southern California retirement community, highlighting disparate viewpoints about marijuana in older Americans.

In a classic tale of old people who want to get a little stoned, 150 residents of the 18,000-person gated retirement community Laguna Woods Village set up a little weed distribution plan. The only problem: the Golden Rain Foundation, the group of volunteers that governs the residential community, disallowed the cultivation of marijuana in the development's gardens.

Per their state-mandated legal right, any of those seniors who have medical marijuana cards may grow up to six mature plants per person in their private residences. Despite this, their usage ? whether medical or otherwise ? has not been universally accepted in the community with an average age of 78.

?This did stir up a lot of feelings,? Laguna Woods Village resident Susan Margolis, 67, told the Associated Press. ?There are a lot of people that have never used marijuana and there are younger people who have used marijuana who say, ?Come on now, this is just ridiculous.'?

Woods said that the attitude towards marijuana was primarily split along generational lines. Residents of the community must be at least 55 to move in.

After the communal growing plan was nixed by the community's governing board, members of the senior pot collective tried to run their own greenhouse in a rented facility away from Laguna Woods Village, but they reportedly lost thousands of dollars worth of marijuana when a light was plugged into the wrong outlet.

In another attempt at having a steady supply, some seniors gave seedlings to a grower operating a greenhouse in Los Angeles, but the police shut down the facility and the plants were destroyed.

After that incident, a collective member began two off-site greenhouses, the location of which the seniors refused to disclose to the Associated Press. According to one member, the marijuana is sold to collective members on a sliding scale predicated on need and ability to pay. Prices range from $35 an ounce to about $200 an ounce.

But while collective members are smoking strains with names like ?Sour Tsunami,? many are dealing with debilitating health problems. Several regular users told the AP that they suffered from osteoarthritis, debilitating nausea and the after-effects of a stroke.

It is this pain, rather than a desire to be stoned, that drives many members of the pot collective to grow and smoke marijuana.

?Look, whether it's a legal thing or not a legal thing, it helps you. I am 90 years old and I don't mind talking about it,? collective member Joe Schwartz told the AP.

Schwartz's is an attitude that is growing in popularity among seniors throughout the country. A series of surveys from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration showed that the number of people aged 50 and older who reported marijuana use in the prior year went up from 1.9% to 2.9% from 2002 to 2008.

When you go to steam food the first thing to understand is that for even cooking you need to cut everything about the same size. You also want to cook different vegetables separately. Broccoli and cauliflower can be cooked together, and so can different types of squash, but that?s because they have similar density. To make cooking multiple foods at the same time easier look into getting a steamer with multiple tiers. You can add the baskets as cooking goes on so that your food will all be done at the same time.

So what types of food should you cook this way? Great foods to steam include eggplant, zucchini, corn, edamame, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, asparagus, peas, black beans, pearl onions, brussel sprouts, red peppers cut into strips, bok choy, and new potatoes-just to name a few. Fun ingredients to play with for flavor include garlic (you can throw in whole cloves or minced), rosemary, thyme, Italian seasoning mixes, smoked paprika, dill, and red pepper flakes-again, just to name a few.

Once done, you can eat these foods straight away, or you can add them to things. For instance, a great tasting low calorie meal is a wrap. Instead of using something like mayonaise, use hummus. It?s got a lot of great nutrients in it and without all of the fat. You don?t have to stick to plain hummus either, mix it up with some garlic or rosemary or olive or red pepper flavored hummus-there are a lot of options out there. Once you spread that on your wrap just go ahead and throw in whatever veggies you?ve steamed. Try some black beans, corn, and zucchini with lettuce. Or try any mixture of the vegetables listed above! This will give you a lot of variety in one low calorie meal idea.

MONTREAL (AFP) ? Torrential rain brought a red-flag suspension to the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday after 25 of the scheduled 70 laps.

World champion Sebastian Vettel, who had started from pole in his Red Bull, was in the lead when the action was halted.

"It's the right decision to stop the race," said Red Bull boss Christian Horner. "The drivers are just passengers, the water lifts the cars up and there is no drive."

The race had started behind the safety car because of the wet conditions.

Former world champion Lewis Hamilton had crashed out after colliding with McLaren teammate Jenson Button after just eight laps.

Hamilton came off worst when he tried -- and failed -- to go up the inside of his fellow Briton.

"What's he doing?" complained Button over the team radio as the safety car was summoned onto the track.

It was a second successive controversial race for the 26-year-old Hamilton.

At the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks ago, the Englishman was penalised for collisions with Felipe Massa of Ferrari and Pastor Maldonado of Williams.

Afterwards he criticised the stewards in an outburst during a television interview, in which he jokingly suggested, with a reference to the comic character Ali G, that he was being victimised because he was black.

He apologised to the stewards in Monte Carlo and wrote a letter of apology to the FIA.

Keith Olbermann has tapped former MSNBC colleague David Sarosi as executive producer of the reboot of his Countdown program on Current TV.
