Braun back with Brewers: 'Lot of fun today'
By TOM WITHERS
updated 6:28 p.m. ET Feb. 25, 2012
PHOENIX - His 50-game suspension and months of anxiety lifted from his shoulders, Ryan Braun carried only an equipment bag containing his bat and glove.
No speeches or suspicions on this day.
Braun took batting practice, shagged fly balls in the outfield and ran the bases like a little kid, relishing every second in the sun.
Back on the field. Back where he belonged.
"It was a lot of fun," Milwaukee's outfielder said Saturday following the Brewers' first full-squad workout this spring. "I had a lot of fun today, just being around my teammates and being on the baseball field and getting to play baseball was nice. It was a lot of fun."
One day after he vehemently defended his innocence and integrity in the aftermath of his suspension for a positive drug test being overturned by an arbitrator, Braun was finally able to put the turmoil behind him.
It was business as usual. It was baseball ? at last.
Following a morning meeting during which manager Ron Roenicke laid out his expectations for the defending NL Central champions, Braun headed out of the clubhouse and was greeted on the sidewalk by a large contingent of Milwaukee fans, who cheered and applauded.
"Atta boy, MVP," yelled one.
"Keep your head up," said another.
Braun smiled and said thanks as he passed inside metal barricades keeping the fans at a safe distance and walked toward a field adjacent to Maryvale Ballpark to get ready for the 2012 season, one he and the Brewers weren't sure would begin with him in the lineup.
Following the two-hour workout, Braun was mobbed for autographs. With two security guards asking the crowd to give him room, he spent 20 minutes talking with fans and signing as many bats, balls and photos as he could before jogging back inside to more applause.
When he got his locker, a member of Milwaukee's media relations staff informed reporters the 28-year-old would answer a few "questions only about baseball."
Braun said he was touched by the reception.
"It felt incredible and I truly appreciate everybody's support, and it's one of the biggest reasons why I've been able to make it through this challenging situation," he said. "That truly meant a lot to me. It was really cool."
While others may have their doubts whether Braun cheated or believe his claims that "this substance never entered my body at any point," Milwaukee fans have always been in his corner.
"I certainly appreciate people who support me when you deal with adversity," he said. "Like I said yesterday, when you go through something like this you see who truly supports you, you see who your friends are and you see how they truly feel about you. It definitely meant a lot to me."
There's no doubt the gravity of the suspension had weighed on Braun, who called it a "nightmare" when he stood near home plate Friday and defiantly declared himself "the victim of a (testing) process that completely broke down and failed."
Braun had learned on Oct. 19 that a urine sample he gave following an Oct. 1 playoff game showed a high level of testosterone. From the outset, he insisted he was innocent and Thursday his appeal was upheld by a three-member panel, making him the first major leaguer to win a drug-related penalty in a grievance.
He wants to move forward, and he took his first steps Saturday while wearing cleats.
"I'm sure he feels like a kid again," said right fielder Corey Hart. "The pressure is off. He can go out there and play with his friends. We're a big team here, but we're a bunch of friends. He's like he's at a schoolyard, just hanging out. It's fun. He hasn't been able to relax and to come out here today, you could tell he had a load off and was just able to hang out and have fun with it."
Braun was at ease around the batting cage. When Japanese rookie Norichika Aoki finished a round, Braun asked if he could see his new teammate's bat and the two shared a laugh despite not speaking the same language.
As the Brewers went through their first workout, owner Mark Attanasio stood near the foul line in the left-field corner and spoke about Braun's ordeal, which hovered over the organization all winter.
Attanasio always thought Braun would be cleared of any wrongdoing.
"Obviously, it wasn't a case of him simply calling me and saying on Thursday afternoon, 'Hey, I didn't do anything. See you in Maryvale,'" Attanasio said. "Statements about his character, I stand behind. I always believed Ryan would win his appeal."
Attanasio, who bought the Brewers in 2005 from Commissioner Bud Selig, was asked if it was difficult to be caught between backing his player while upholding Major League's Baseball's policies.
"It's easy to balance in this case because Ryan has got such a high character and is so demonstratively been an exemplary athlete on this team and member of the Milwaukee community," he said. "So, I'm a big Ryan Braun supporter which extends well beyond his simply being the MVP in the league. And at the same time, I'm the supporter of a strong drug testing program. I believe that MLB does have a strong drug testing program.
"The corollary to everything that we've been talking about is the MVP went through an extremely difficult offseason because MLB has a strong drug testing program and needs to have one. So, the balance is you support both."

Alabama's Immigration Law Effect : Jo & Ray Publication
When Alabama?s Immigration law came into effect in September, it forced many illegal immigrants to leave overnight the state.
Many illegal immigrants, who have fled, are unable to find a job and miss the place that was their home for years.
In the months since, a number of illegal immigrants who fled have returned. Many people are ?still afraid to go out?, they go ?to grocery shopping at night?, according to a legal immigrant.
The Alabama law allowed local police to verify the immigration status of students or people stopped for other crimes.
Federal courts blocked some portions of the law, including the immigration checks at schools. But unlike judges in Arizona and other states who have barred police from checking immigration status during routine stops, U.S. District Judge Sharon Blackburn in Birmingham allowed the police enforcement provision to go into effect in September.
The US Circuit Court of Appeals agreed to hear the arguments on Arizona illegal immigration on March 1, according to sources.

Issues and Ethics in Counselling Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Individuals
A considerable number of lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people will turn to helping professionals when they need assistance with problems. ? Lesbians, gay and bisexual individuals experience similar problems to heterosexual clients, such as anxiety, depression, suicide ideation, alcoholism, violence, relationship problems, and anger. ? There are unique issues faced by LGB persons, however. ? This paper will summarize the major issues for which LGB individuals seek counselling and provide recommendations for counsellors.
Counselling Issues for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Individuals
One of the major counselling issues for LGB people is ?coming out.? ? Coming out refers to the psychological, social, and cultural process of recognizing oneself as a gay man, lesbian or a bisexual person. Coming out can also mean the intentional or unintentional disclosure of one?s LGB identity to others. ? Some LGB people prefer to conceal their lesbian/gay/bisexual identity; they are ?in the closet.? ? They may refrain from discussing their intimate lives with others or may present themselves as heterosexual, a process referred to as ?passing.? Others may disclose their sexual identity in various ways to family members, friends, religious leaders, co-workers, and the general public.
The identity and disclosure process is ongoing and central to understanding the life experiences of LGB individuals, even when the problem for which a gay man, lesbian or bisexual individual is seeking counselling is not the coming out process. ? Depression, suicide, alcohol and other drug use, grief and loss, are but a few of the problems faced by LGB people that are related to identity and disclosure.
Another major counselling issue for LGB people is family of origin. ? The norms, values, and attitudes of family members may condemn or condone homosexuality. ? The racial, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds of LGB persons are?

Republican Debate: Mitt Romney Seeks to Derail Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich Kind of Throws in Towel
Arizona hosted the 20th GOP debate of this election cycle last night, and what followed was a wide-ranging discussion of issues ... and a familiar personal slap-fest.
It's all the same, only the names change. Wednesday, it was Rick Santorum in the coveted, yet also unfortunate role of the guy Mitt Romney trains his sights on.
Romney and Santorum clashed over the federal government's power in a high-stakes debate that might have been the last in the roller-coaster campaign.
Ron Paul was Ron Paul, defiantly making the case for liberty and getting far too little screen time. Newt Gingrich? He may have effectively called it quits.
The combative, knock-'em-out Newt was AWOL. Instead, the jovial Uncle Newt was back, playing everyone's wingman (and promising $2.50/gallon gas).
It was like mid-to-late 2011 again as Gingrich the enthusiastic, vigorously nodding candidate who would never speak ill of a fellow Republican resurfaced.
Even with his now-infamous media foil, CNN's John King, as the moderator, too. Go figure. A shift in strategy as he looks for a third comeback? Maybe.
He'd surely take it if it happened. But equally likely is that his moment passed, he knows it, and is looking to mend fences with his rivals and America.
The debate was held in the southwestern state of Arizona six days before primaries there and in Romney's native Michigan, which he loves everything about.
Romney still faces skepticism among Republicans who dislike his shifting stances on issues, but it was Santorum being called a "fake" conservative by Paul.
Santorum was booed by the audience for his explanation of why he voted several years ago for No Child Left Behind, even though he says he opposed it.
"Look, politics is a team sport, folks," he said of the measure backed by GOP President George W. Bush and other Republicans during his term.
The candidates fought energetically over health care. Santorum said Romney signed the Massachusetts state law that served as a model for Obamacare.
Perhaps the most hot-button topic was later broached when CNN asked, “Which candidate believes in birth control?” This was met with resounding boos.
Yes, the crowd seemed to be booing the concept of birth control.
At one point, a questioner asked the candidates to describe themselves in one word. Paul: “consistent.” Santorum: “courage.” Gingrich: “cheerful.” Romney: “resolute.”
"Resolute" is Trending on Google right now. Mitt can't even sum himself up in one word people understand without having to look up or reference first.
The final question of the night - what’s the biggest misconception about you? - saw Romney choose to respond instead with a spiel about his vision for America.
King tried to stop and bring him back to the “misconception” query. Romney shot back, “You get to ask the questions you want. I get to give the answers I want.”
Not really, but King deferred ... probably out of confusion.
Overall, an impressively wide range of issues were touched upon, though personal squabbling often took over and made it hard to assess their qualifications.
Paul, in particular, is marginalized as Romney looks to squash the candidate with the best poll numbers that week. He barely makes the highlights (below).
Is that what the Republican debate process is about?
As for Romney and Santorum, it remains to be seen if last night blunts the latter's surge a bit after his first appearance as a bona fide co-frontrunner.
Resistance to Romney has been a consistent theme of the campaign, as has the voters' unwillingness to coalesce around one "non-Romney" figure.
Will Arizona and Michigan change that by delivering one or more wins for Santorum next week? If not, can Romney cruise the rest of the way? Stay tuned.

How to Write a Restaurant Business Plan, the Essentials ...
Restaurants have one of the highest failure rates. The nature of the business in dealing with perishables and the fickle tastes of people is difficult to grasp. Many lenders simply exclude them from their portfolios in general but everyone knows a great restaurant can create a lot of wealth for the owners.
Never forget this statement, lenders and investors are sophisticated in commerce and they know when someone is on their level in business knowledge. You must distinguish yourself, just like stock market investors, lenders invest in people. Do not fear your short comings but show how you HAVE experienced advisers available.
Most necessary information related to business is basic but they want to see you have a basic insight into overall economic influences as well. Read and watch financial television to learn and be comfortable with discussions in those areas. After a time you will begin to see the conversations are very similar. You now have insight into the content of your restaurant business plan, it is the same discussion.
Another suggestion to prepare for writing your plan is go online and search for annual reports for restaurants traded on the stock exchange; they are usually free of charge and useful even if they are old. Most of them are mind numbing at first, study until you see the same pattern you found watching the TV shows. Get some basic information about financial statements just to learn the layout and how the numbers relate and tell the health of the company. Buy a book about investing in stocks to absorb the mindset of an investor.
You should be able to demonstrate a clear and fundamental understanding of how the economy and other outside factors will affect your enterprise. Knowing facts about your competitors and even publicly traded restaurants will show a level of experience you may not even have but they will see you belong to the top 1/10% of your industry and every other person who brings a deal in front of them.
Unless you intend to raise a million dollars or more you should research and write your restaurant business plan yourself. The preparation to do so will engrain the process into your mind and the command of the information will impress your lending prospect. Be sure to highlight every small difference related to why you believe in your venture. Keep in mind very small improvements in long established industries have made many people very successful.
Read a little about persuasive writing and use a formal style with no contractions, slang or industry jargon which is not explained.
Buying a template will help you organize your thoughts and provide a framework for all your expertise to be displayed. These are very helpful. Once you master the basics, admittedly a large body of information, begin to focus on your specialty, here are two examples:
Maybe you are interested in starting a caf? and need a caf? business plan. Here you will begin to build your case about why you think you have found an opportunity. This could be how an area underserved because it has experienced huge growth and residents drive a long distance. Demonstrate a broad perspective.
Regretfully, the bar business does well in a good location with a bad economy. Keep in mind people do not go to a bar to drink, they go to socialize. Bars should work well anytime but they can be recession proof. Your approach will be the social aspect of writing the bar business plan and why you have the edge to make one work.
Hopefully you are very talented for the restaurant industry but remember, every talent, once discovered, must be developed. Know where you want to go, this is a clear goal. Identify every possible need to reach the goal, and then list what you have. This is the first step to writing a great restaurant business plan.
The author began his first company at sixteen years of age, forty years ago. He currently manages several companies in different industries. He is writing from a broad base of business experience, a solid foundation for any venture. Recently he has begun offer environmental services for air quality reporting to natural gas producers as well as insights for how to produce income online.
He has written many pans including restaurant business plans.
Wishing You Great Success,
Dusty Farrell

China's VP heads home after a little Laker magic
LOS ANGELES?? Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping began the last day of his U.S. visit by urging closer ties and arguing that Americans benefit from their trade relationship with China.
"A prosperous and stable China will not be a threat to any country," Xi said Friday. "It will only be a positive force for world peace and development."
Xi, who is expected to become president of the world's most populous nation next year, started his fourth day in the United States at a downtown Los Angeles trade conference hosted by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce. His American counterpart, Vice President Joe Biden, joined him later.
Xi wrapped up his visit at Staples Center, where he attended a Los Angeles Lakers-Phoenix Suns basketball game Friday night, where he was presented with a jersey with his name on it in the company of Lakers legend Magic Johnson and soccer star David Beckham.
Following the Lakers' victory, Xi and his party left for the airport.
'Personal friendship'
Xi said that he felt from his visit that "mainstream American opinion" supports stronger ties.
"I can now say that my visit has been fully successful," he said.
"We've established a personal friendship and a healthy working relationship," he said of himself and Biden.
Xi is almost sure to succeed Hu Jintao as Chinese president in just over a year, and the final day of his tour of the United States featured commercial deals and reassuring talk intended to blunt American ire about the trade gap between the countries.
"We will further increase imports from other countries in the light of our economic and social development and consumer demand. We will actively expand imports from the United States," Xi later told a midday meeting.

Any view that the U.S. is the loser in its trade relationship with China "does not square with facts," Xi said through a translator.
Chinese imports have helped Americans improve their standard of living and created more than 3 million new jobs in the U.S. from 2001 to 2010, Xi said.
Xi also said that China's economic momentum would not falter as some economists warn.
"China's economy will maintain stable growth," he said. "There will be no so-called hard landing."
Video: Obama welcomes Chinese VP (on this page)Biden told reporters the talks with Xi had been very forthright, and was also intensely curious about the workings of the American political system.
"This is a guy who wants to feel it and taste it, and he's prepared to show another side of Chinese leadership," said Biden. "He is intensely interested in understanding why we think the way we do, what our positions are, and the need to actually broaden this kind of understanding."
Xi's candor appreciated
Biden said he appreciated Xi's candor. "He is very, very direct. When we disagree, there's a clear statement of disagreement," Biden said. "I was impressed by how much he wants to know about how our system works."
California Gov. Jerry Brown and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa both lauded the U.S.-China relationship.
"We've got a great future together," said Brown, who announced plans to open a new trade and investment office in China.
China is a major trade partner with Los Angeles, which has greatly benefited from its Pacific Rim position and has courted Chinese businesses and their potential jobs.
China to ease access for US movies, Biden says
During his visit, Xi toured the Port of Los Angeles, America's busiest port complex. Nearly 60 percent of the imports moving through the port come from China.
Outside the hotel hosting the trade forum, picketers protested Chinese policies in Tibet and its treatment of Falun Gong followers.

Two protesters were cited for standing in the roadway but no one was arrested, Los Angeles Police spokesman Cleon Joseph said.
After the trade forum, Xi and Biden visited a suburban school in South Gate that specializes in Asian studies to promote more American students studying in China.
Students make America look good
The vice presidents watched a traditional Chinese "dragon dance" performed by middle- and high-school students at the International Studies Learning Center, a public school that is part of the Asia Society's network of schools across the country.
"You are an impressive group of students," Biden said. "Thank you for making America look so good."
Biden told the students that the U.S.-China relationship is the single most important relationship the country has in the 21st century.

Under the 100,000 Strong Initiative, the White House aims to have at least that many American students studying in China.
Xi, who spoke with a class of high school students learning Chinese, lauded their Mandarin skills, saying it was important to learn the culture as well as the language to avoid misunderstandings.

Nasty 'superbug' emerging? Strikes otherwise healthy, young patients
ScienceDaily (Feb. 17, 2012) ? University at Buffalo researchers are expressing concern about a new, under-recognized, much more potent variant of a common bacterium that has surfaced in the U.S.
"Historically, in Western countries, classical strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae have caused infections mostly in sick, hospitalized patients whose host defense systems are compromised," says Thomas Russo, MD, professor in the Department of Medicine at the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and head of its Infectious Disease Division.
"But in the last 10 to 15 years, a new variant of it has begun causing community-acquired infection in young, healthy individuals," he says. "This variant causes serious, life-threatening, invasive infections and is able to spread to other organs from the initial site of infection."
Perhaps most important, says Russo, these hypervirulent strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae have the potential to become highly resistant to antibiotics, similar to Escherichia coli and classical Klebsiella pneumoniae.
"These hypervirulent strains are the next 'superbugs' -in-waiting," he says. "If they become resistant to antibiotics, they will become difficult, if not impossible to treat."
With recent funding from the National Institutes of Health under a program to fund high-risk, high-reward research, Russo and his UB colleagues are studying the microbiology of the new variant of Klebsiella pneumoniae in an effort to identify the genes that make it hypervirulent so they can figure out how to stop it in its tracks.
"Infections due to highly resistant bacteria are becoming increasingly problematic," says Russo. "We are continually threatened by a 'post-antibiotic' era. The combination of a bacterium that is both highly virulent and resistant to antimicrobials is double-trouble."
The researchers' concern stems from the fact that classical Klebsiella pneumoniae is one of the bacterial species that can easily acquire mobile genetic units, called plasmids, that contain multiple genes that confer high levels of antimicrobial resistance.
"That's in part why we're concerned," says Russo. "We know that this bacterium has the potential to acquire these plasmids and it almost certainly will."
He notes that most bacteria that have proven to be resistant to most or all of the drugs currently available do not usually infect healthy members of the community.
"What is alarming about the hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae is that they do possess the potential to infect healthy people," says Russo. "If this hypervirulent bacterium also becomes highly resistant to antimicrobials, we will have a significant problem to manage. We hope that our research and that of others can prevent this possibility."
While the new hypervirulent variant was first seen exclusively in in the Pacific Rim, it has now been found in several cities in North America, including Buffalo, and in Europe, Canada, Israel and South Africa as well. The UB researchers characterize it as "under-recognized" both by physicians and microbiology laboratories.
The disease most commonly presents as a liver abscess, which is not typical for otherwise healthy patients.
"This new variant presents with unique and scary features: first is its tendency to infect young, healthy people in the community and the second is its unique propensity for metastatic spread to other parts of the body," says Russo. "It spreads to sites beyond the initial source of the infection, such as the lungs, the central nervous system and the eye, potentially causing loss of vision. If infection spreads to the brain, there can be brain damage as well. Between 10 and 30 percent of cases are fatal."
In Buffalo, this hypervirulent variant of Klebsiella pneumoniae was identified in an otherwise healthy, young person several years ago. The patient, who was in his 20s, was hospitalized for several months before making a full recovery. Similar cases are causing concern throughout the international infectious disease community.
At the moment, most cases of hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae resolve if treated aggressively with antibiotics and drainage of abscesses; however, some infections, despite optimal treatment, result in a persistent morbidity or death, Russo says.
He notes that the potential for the bug to acquire drug resistance is adding a sense of urgency to the research.
Russo says that microbiology labs should be aware that an important characteristic of these hypervirulent strains (also known as hypermucoviscous strains) is that when bacterial colonies grown on a solid surface in the laboratory are stretched by a common microbiology tool, called an inoculation loop, they form a viscous "string" greater than 5 millimeters in length.
Russo's team at UB is now beginning to develop a clearer picture of this formidable bacterial opponent.
In November, he and his colleagues published a PLoS ONE paper that showed that hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae acquires iron more efficiently than the usual strains of K. pneumoniae.
"With the NIH grant, we hope to further elucidate the precise details of the bacterial factors that are responsible for hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae acquiring iron so much more efficiently," he says. "The goal of this line of research is that these iron-acquisition factors possessed by hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae will then lend themselves as therapeutic or vaccine targets so that we can better treat or prevent infection."
In addition to Russo, other UB researchers working on hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae are Alyssa S. Shon, an Infectious Diseases Fellow in the Department of Medicine; Janet Beanan, Ulrike MacDonald, Daniel Metzger and Ruth Olson, all research technicians in the Department of Medicine, and Alex Pomakov, a UB undergraduate majoring in biomedical sciences. Mark P. Visitacion, MD, a former Infectious Diseases Fellow in the UB Department of Medicine, was also part of the team.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? The best voices of a generation all paid tribute to her. But in the end, the most powerful voice at Whitney Houston's funeral was her own.
The first notes of "I Will Always Love You," at the end of a 3 ?-hour remembrance of the pop superstar, played Saturday as her casket left the hometown church where she first wowed a congregation.
Her mother, gospel singer Cissy Houston, walked right behind her, sobbing, "My baby."
Houston's voice ? "you wait for a voice like that for a lifetime," mentor Clive Davis said ? moved her daughter, mourners like Oprah Winfrey and a packed church to tears after the biggest names in gospel and pop music sang about God, love, lost angels and moving on.
Stevie Wonder rewrote lyrics to "Ribbon in the Sky" for Houston ? "you will always be a ribbon in the sky," he sang. So did gospel's the Rev. Kim Burrell for "A Change is Gonna Come," which cousin Dionne Warwick said was Houston's favorite song of all time. R. Kelly brought the New Hope Baptist Church to its feet with a stirring version of "I Look to You," the title of Houston's final studio album.
Wonder and Alicia Keys may have been the most famous singers offering tributes, in a congregation of mourners that included Winfrey, Mariah Carey, Kevin Costner and Chaka Khan. But the church choir and performances from the Winans family, the gospel star Rev. Donnie McClurkin and Burrell were equally powerful.
Houston's 18-year-old daughter, Bobbi Kristina, sobbed and embraced Houston's close friend, singer Ray J at length, as her mother's voice began to drift through the church. His sister, singer Brandy, put her arm around him throughout the service.
Clapping hands, swaying and singing along with the choir to gospel hymns, the biggest names in entertainment joined Houston's family and fans in the New Jersey city where she was first born and found her in voice in church.
Costner, Houston's co-star in "The Bodyguard", which spawned her greatest hit, imagined a young Houston using her winning smile to get out of trouble. He also remembered the megastar as uncertain of her own fame, who "still wondered, 'Am I good enough? Am I pretty enough? Will they like me?'"
"It was the burden that made her great and the part that caused her to stumble in the end," Costner said.
Filmmaker Tyler Perry praised Houston's "grace that kept on carrying her all the way through, the same grace led her all the way to the top of the charts. She sang for presidents."
Warwick presided over the funeral, introducing speakers and singers and offering short insights about her cousin; she joked that Houston's Super Bowl performance of "The Star Spangled Banner" became almost as big as the telephone book.
Houston's mother was helped by two people on either side of her as she walked in and sat with her granddaughter and other family to begin the service.
Houston's ex-husband, Bobby Brown, briefly appeared at her funeral, walking to the casket, touching it and walking out. He later said in a statement that he and his children were asked repeatedly to move and he left rather than risk creating a scene. Close family friend Aretha Franklin, whom Houston lovingly called "Aunt Ree," had been expected to sing at the service, but said early Saturday she was too ill to attend. Franklin said in an email to The Associated Press that she had been up most of the night with leg spasms and sent best wishes to the family
Singers Jennifer Hudson, who sang "I Will Always Love You" a night after Houston's death in a Grammy tribute, mourned Houston along with Monica, Brandy, Jordin Sparks ? representing a generation of big-voiced young singers who grew up emulating the star of the '80s and '90s.
As the funeral began, mourners fell quiet as three police officers escorted Houston's casket, draped with white roses and purple lilies. White-robed choir members began to fill the pews on the podium. As the band played softly, the choir sang in a hushed voice, "Whitney, Whitney, Whitney."
A program featuring a picture of Houston looking skyward read "Celebrating the life of Whitney Elizabeth Houston, a child of God." Pictures of Houston as a baby, with her mother and daughter filled the program.
"I never told you that when you were born, the Holy Spirit told me that you would not be with me long," Cissy Houston wrote her daughter in a letter published in the program. "And I thank God for the beautiful flower he allowed me to raise and cherish for 48 years."
"Rest, my baby girl in peace," the letter ends, signed "mommie."
The service marks one week after Houston, one of music's all-time biggest stars, was found dead in the bathtub of a Beverly Hills hotel the night before the Grammys. A cause of death has yet to be determined.
To the world, Houston was the pop queen with the perfect voice, the dazzling diva with regal beauty, a troubled superstar suffering from addiction and, finally, another victim of the dark side of fame.
To her family and friends, she was just "Nippy." A nickname given to Houston when she was a child, it stuck with her through adulthood and, later, would become the name of one of her companies. To them, she was a sister, a friend, a daughter, and a mother.
"She always had the edge," the Rev. Jesse Jackson said outside church Saturday. "You can tell when some kids have what we call a special anointing. Aretha had that when she was 14. ... Whitney cultivated that and took it to a very high level."
A few fans gathered hours before the service as close as they could get to the church, some from as far away as Washington, D.C., and Miami. Bobby Brooks said he came from Washington "just to be among the rest of the fans."
"Just to celebrate her life, not just her death," said Brooks, "just to sing and dance with the people that love her."
Others were more entrepreneurial, setting up card tables to sell silk-screened T-shirts with Houston's image and her CDs. But only the invited would get close to the church; streets were closed to the public for blocks in every direction. But their presence was felt around the church, with a huge shrine of heart-shaped balloons and personal messages that covered the street corner around the church entrance.
Houston's death marked the final chapter for the superstar whose fall from grace while shocking was years in the making. Houston had her first No. 1 hit by the time she was 22, followed by a flurry of No. 1 songs and multi-platinum records.
Over her career, she sold more than 50 million records in the United States alone. Her voice, an ideal blend of power, grace and beauty, made classics out of songs like "Saving All My Love For You," ''I Will Always Love You," ''The Greatest Love of All" and "I'm Every Woman." Her six Grammys were only a fraction of her many awards.
But amid the fame, a turbulent marriage to Brown and her addiction to drugs tarnished her image. She became a woman falling apart in front of the world.
Her last album, "I Look To You," debuted on the top of the charts when it was released in 2009 with strong sales, but didn't have the staying power of her previous records. A tour the next year was doomed by cancellations because of illness and sub-par performances.
Houston is to be buried Sunday next to her father, John Houston, in nearby Westfield, N.J.

Oversight committee members, union officials spar over dashboard cameras
By Joe Schoenmann (Las Vegas Sun)
It was only because a Highway Patrol cruiser was equipped with a camera that the public learned a Henderson motorist in the throes of a diabetic episode had been held down and kicked by police officers.
Outrage over the incident has included calls for all police vehicles to be equipped with cameras, but there is disagreement over how quickly it could happen.
The head of the union representing Las Vegas Police said installation of dashboard cameras would have to be negotiated under future contracts. But a member of the committee of elected officials who oversee Metro?s finances said that isn?t the case.
The Sun reported last week on the Nevada Highway Patrol video showing a Henderson police officer kicking driver Adam Greene, who was restrained on the ground. The city has settled with Greene and his wife for about $250,000.
At the time of the October 2010 incident, Henderson police did not have dashboard cameras in their vehicles, but the Highway Patrol did.
Last year, Henderson used a $1.2 million federal grant to install them in 150 vehicles.
Chris Collins, executive director of the Las Vegas Police Protective Association union, said that for Southern Nevada?s largest force, Metro Police, to have its vehicles equipped with video cameras it would be ?a piece of safety equipment they would have to negotiate with us.?
But Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak, a member of the Fiscal Affairs Committee that oversees Metro?s spending, said if money is available, either through grants or surplus funds Metro carries from year to year, he would support immediate installation of dashboard cameras.
?I don?t understand how equipment would be a negotiated item any more than the type of vehicles or uniforms,? Sisolak said, adding that most police departments already use dashboard cameras.
Indeed, hundreds of police departments nationwide are now testing cameras that officers wear on their clothing that record interactions between the officer and the public.
But if Metro, whose sheriff often pledges to run a transparent department, is considering dashboard cameras, no one has told the police union.
The sheriff could not be immediately reached for comment.
Sisolak said video of police stops would protect officers against false accusations.
?It provides another level of transparency and gives the public another level of comfort with our police force,? he said.
Police videos around the country are cited in legal battles, weeding out false accusations of police brutality or misconduct.
In November, Midland, Texas, police officers were found justified in a fatal shooting, in part because of dashboard video. Video cleared Monona, Wis., officers in a questioned shooting of a kidnapper in December 2010. Officers were also cleared of wrongdoing in Sioux City, Iowa, when video disproved a woman?s allegations that she was mistreated by police during an arrest in January.
After the Henderson incident, Nevada Highway Patrol Major Kevin Tice said he believed every police vehicle in the country would have dashboard cameras.
?They?ve been a real nice tool? for accountability, he said. ?We defend ourselves, and the way we do that is to hold our people accountable.?
But some police departments and cities remain wary of video. The city of Seattle and its police department, facing accusations of excessive force, have been sued seeking release of video footage. The department has lost tens of thousands of videos, the station, KOMO-TV, reported.
On Monday, the station showed police video of a Seattle officer telling a suspect ? who was never charged ? that he would ?make stuff up? to uphold a robbery charge.
Attorney James Egan, who is seeking 36 videos from the Seattle Police Department, has been sued by the city, which wants the courts to decide if he is entitled to them. Seattle maintains it has the right to keep videos from the public for three years, its interpretation of the Privacy Act.
?It?s very self-serving,? Egan said, adding that suspicions are heightened by the fact that ?three years after an incident is when the videos are slated for deletion.?
Egan said that in 2005, a Microsoft executive suffering a diabetic reaction was hit with a Taser by a Redmond police officer because she refused to open her door. The executive received a $150,000 settlement.
Egan said if Metro Police install dash cams, they ?should show their hand by putting videos online within two days to a week of an encounter.? That would avoid some of the problems Seattle has had, he said.
Sisolak said he?s going to ask the police department to find money to install cameras in squad cars.
?I want to see how this might be paid for,? he said. ?I think it?s something we should definitely look at.?

Singapore Property Investors View London Real Estate | Casey ...
According to the most recent report from Ernst & Young, London is still the reigning champion in Europe for inward investments. While it would be a stretch of the imagination to say that all those overseas investors were putting their capital into real estate, property investment is nonetheless huge and comprises a good bit of overseas investments. A very big part of the reason for this is in the fact that property values throughout most of the rest of the UK have been falling, as well as elsewhere in Europe, but London property value has remained fairly consistent on the high end.
Foreign investors are also realising that London is the world?s foremost financial hub, and along with United States, is closely intertwined with Singapore investors. Nonetheless, a lot of overseas investors have the primary concern of not having someone locally available to manage their foreign real estate investments on their behalf. Fortunately, individuals that deal with 1stAsset when making Singapore property investments never have to worry about this issue, as they have dedicated staff available in both London and Singapore. Thus, investors from Singapore are never left unrepresented or uninformed about their property investments, as 1stAsset facilitates and maintains complete contact on both ends.
Even when investing in a thriving financial hub like the city of London, it would still be advisable to have a strategic investment plan. Purchasing a property and then renovating it to sell it for a hefty mark-up would be a wise strategy for some investors. Meanwhile, other investors find it preferable to let property values increase significantly before choosing to sell. Once the value of a property has risen enough to allow for a decent profit, most investors would begin considering putting it up for sale to make a nice profit. Conversely, many investors find it more beneficial to simply rent their properties out and turn their profit into a residual income.
Property investors from Singapore that are looking to buy/sell/rent their investments can rest assured when dealing with a realty/property management company that specialises in meeting the needs of overseas investors. 1stAsset not only specialises in assisting overseas investors, it specifically accommodates the needs of Singaporean investors on a frequent basis. It would help to have a property management team that can manage deals on both sides of the pond, and is knowledgeable about United Kingdom property sales regulations. Having a realty company that specifically specialises in UK registration and taxation would be particularly helpful to overseas landlords. Furthermore, it would also be beneficial to have a property management team that is capable of handling financial tasks like setting up business bank accounts in the United Kingdom.
There are a lot of aspects to consider when investing in property in the UK, from passing gas/safety inspections to obtaining an Electricity Performance Certificate. 1stAsset can help with every step involved in purchasing a property in London, and has helped many Singaporean investors do so with no problems. While they have dedicated staff in the United Kingdom that acts as your representative in London, they also have a team that can address your concerns in Singapore as well. Having experienced property management agents on location in both the United Kingdom and Singapore would be a beneficial arrangement, regardless of whether you?re trying to purchase properties to lease out or flip for a quick profit.

Apple may face iPad export ban in China trademark row
By Artemisia Ng and Melanie Lee
HONG KONG/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - A Chinese tech firm that claims it still owns the iPad trademark will seek a ban on exports of Apple Inc's computer tablets from China, which could deal a blow to the U.S. technology giant's sales worldwide.
Proview Technology (Shenzhen) Co Ltd is petitioning Chinese customs to stop shipments of Apple's popular iPads in and out of China, but has not received a response, lawyer Xie Xianghui told Asian Legal Business, a Thomson Reuters publication.
Apple said it bought Proview's worldwide rights to the trademark in 10 different countries several years ago, including
rights to the iPad name from a Taiwan subsidiary. However, Proview claims the sale did not cover the trademark's use in China.
"Proview refuses to honor their agreement with Apple in China and a Hong Kong court has sided with Apple in this matter," an Apple spokeswoman said.
Customs officials could not be reached for comment, and Proview declined to comment.
Apple could be in a very difficult situation if it had mistakenly bought rights from the wrong Proview subsidiary, said Thomas Chan, a Los Angeles-based attorney who has represented companies in trademark licensing negotiations with Apple.
"They've got a real, real problem," Chan said. "They're going to pay through the nose."
Apple's legal tussle with Proview Technology (Shenzhen) over the trademark name iPad, is emerging as the latest headache for the U.S. giant in a booming market and highlights the legal challenges facing foreign multinationals operating in China.
Not only is China a huge consumer market but it is also a major production base for the U.S. company's iconic products including the iPad, iPhone and iPod media player.
This week Apple announced it had agreed to an outside inspection of working conditions at its main contract manufacturers, including Foxconn's plants in southern China.
Apple lost a case to Proview Technology (Shenzhen) in a Shenzhen court in southern China late last year when the court agreed that Proview owned the iPad trademark.
Apple has appealed the decision and a final hearing is due to start in the southern Guangdong High Court on Feb 29. This court's decision will be final under the Chinese legal process.
Proview's latest salvo comes a day after media reports that authorities in some Chinese cities had ordered retailers to stop selling Apple's iPad due to the dispute.
Proview has also filed lawsuits against Apple in Shanghai and Shenzhen, and retailers selling iPads in Futian and Huizhou, located in the south of the country.
Apple's options are limited to either settling with Proview Technology (Shenzhen), appealing to a higher court, or facing devastating enforcement actions in China, legal experts said.
"There are two views we can take here. One view is, Apple was not sufficiently prudent and therefore, this was missed by Apple and its attorneys," said Elliot Papageorgiou, a Shanghai-based partner and executive at law firm Rouse Legal (China).
"A more charitable view would be that, Apple said that for business reasons we need to use this brand and as far as the name in China is concerned, let's cross the bridge when we come to it," he said.
Proview lawyer Xie, partner of Grandall Law Firm's Shenzhen office, said Apple is not in negotiations with the Chinese firm.
Local media reported recently that Proview was taking legal action, seeking up to 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) in compensation from Apple for trademark infringement.
"Without a win in that Shenzhen case, all the other actions, whether it is administrative or with different courts, customs, Apple is not in a good position at all," said Stan Abrams, an IP law professor at Beijing's Central University of Finance and Economics.
