ST. LOUIS - About the time the St. Louis Cardinals fell 10 1/2 games out of first place in late-August, manager Tony La Russa paid a visit to commissioner Bud Selig during a series in Milwaukee.

Recalling that meeting before World Series Game 7, Selig said: "I congratulated him on his year, and he said, 'we're not done'. And he wasn't kidding. When you think back, a lot of things had to happen. It's been amazing.''

Then the Cardinals went out and finished one of the unlikeliest, unexpected World Series championships ? a fitting end to a captivating postseason.

The party at Busch Stadium started as soon as left fielder Allen Craig caught David Murphy's fly ball for the final out in a 6-2 victory over the Texas Rangers, and carried on for a couple hours. Next stop: A Sunday parade through downtown.

"I think it's the best moment of my career,'' first baseman Albert Pujols said amidst the celebration. "The way that we did it. The way that we got in (to the playoffs). The way that we won it. It's pretty special.''

So many memorable moments. So many storylines. So many different elements. But when you think about it, in a postseason including a record 38 games ? only three possible games weren't played in the seven postseason series ? and 13 one-run games, who else but the wild-card Cardinals, a team that didn't get in until the last day of the regular season, should win it all?

"It's hard to really imagine it actually happened,'' La Russa said.

Last things first: Your World Series MVP (and NLCS MVP, as well) is David Freese, and don't feel too badly if you didn't know much about him until now. The quickie bio:

St. Louis kid, quit the game for a while after high school, traded to the Cardinals organization as a minor-leaguer in 2007, endured a string of injuries that slowed his development, and in his third big-league regular season, hit .290 with only 10 home runs and 55 RBI in 97 games before all of this:

  • Setting a new postseason RBI record with 21, and tying the hits (25) and doubles (8) records.
  • Hitting five home runs and posting a .397 postseason average ? including .545 in the NLCS and .348 in the World Series.
  • Joining five others who have won LCS and World Series MVPs in the same postseason.

If you told Freese a decade ago where' he'd be on Friday night, he says his response would have been, "no chance. This is why you keep battling. I had plenty of days in my life when I thought I wasn't close to being a big-leaguer.''

Freese's Game 6 heroics were legendary enough ? a two-out, two-strike, two-run triple that tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, and the walk-off blast over the center-field wall to win it in the 11th.

But he wasn't finished. In Game 7, his two-run double in the bottom of the first tied the game, and set the tone on a night when the Rangers couldn't get up after a final blow to the gut.

"This means everything,'' Freese said. "As I sit here now, I can't believe we did this.''

There's no questioning the role MLB played in postponing Game 6 by one night due to a forecast of rain. If the game had been played Wednesday, it would have been affected by cold, drizzly conditions ? although very possibly would have gone uninterrupted.

But there's also no denying the affect that decision had on this series, as it allowed ace Chris Carpenter to come back on three days' rest and become the first pitcher since Boston's Bruce Hurst in 1986 to start both a World Series Game 5 and Game 7.

And in a postseason filled with brilliant decision-making ? and one uncharacteristically memorable set of Game 5 gaffes ? La Russa may have saved his best choice for last. Except that he really didn't make the decision to start Carpenter. It was made for him after a conversation between Carpenter and pitching coach Dave Duncan.

"I called Dunc (Friday) morning, and said, 'let's lay out the options','' La Russa said. "And he said, "it's Carp', and he hung up on me."

Carpenter convinced Duncan that he was up to the task physically, and would make a pitch selection adjustment after learning from a failed start on three days' rest in NLDS Game 2 against Philadelphia (four earned runs in three innings).

"And the last part of it is what he means to our club,'' La Russa said. "I think our guys feel better about him starting than anybody else.''

And why not? Carpenter made his way through six-plus innings in Game 7, allowing only two first-inning runs, and won his fourth game of this postseason (4-0-3.25 ERA). Climbing the list of postseason pitching heroes, he is 9-3-3.05 in 15 career starts and 4-0-2.00 in four World Series starts.

"I didn't know how long they would let me go, so tried hard to get every out I could,'' Carpenter said. "Nobody said anything to me (about being lifted), and I felt stronger and my command got better as I went along.''

Just as the Cardinals did down the stretch. How did it all come together in such dominating fashion: 23-9 after Aug. 25 and 15-5 in their last 20 before upsetting the heavily favored Philadelphia Phillies, Milwaukee Brewers, and finally, rallying from a 3-2 deficit to beat the Rangers?

About the time they fell to that double-digit deficit, a close team came even closer, led by the veteran influences of Pujols, Carpenter, Lance Berkman and others.

"A few of us felt that something had to be said,'' Carpenter said. "I was, 'we need to start playing St. Louis Cardinals baseball.' It was about continuing to play hard and playing like we're capable of playing.''

Moves made around the trade deadline that brought Edwin Jackson, Octavio Dotel, Marc Rzepczynski, Arthur Rhodes (released by Texas, ironically) and Rafael Furcal not only filled talent gaps, but instilled a new sense of focus and purpose: Winning rings for veterans who hadn't won any.

"Mo (General manager John Mozeliak) asked us if we made some changes, would we have a chance to win?'' La Russa said. "And we said yes. So he went out and put his neck on the line, and made the changes.

"The first couple weeks with the better ball club, we weren't playing well, and we kind of avoided Mo for a while. But then we started showing that he had given us more weapons. And this is where we ended up.''

As the 11th Cardinals team to win a World Series, the fifth wild-card team to do so, and the 19th team to rally from a 3-2 deficit.

"We have more talent than people think,'' La Russa said. "But we have great guts.''

Steelers stomp Pats

Roethlisberger passes for 365 yards, two touchdowns

Ben Roethlisberger celebrates with Max Starks during the Steelers' victory over the Patriots on Sunday.

By WILL GRAVES

updated 7:41 p.m. ET Oct. 30, 2011

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Steelers no longer have a Tom Brady problem. And that may be a problem for the rest of the NFL.

Old, slow and over? Not quite yet.

Ben Roethlisberger picked apart the NFL's worst defense and the Steelers rattled the nearly unflappable Brady in a 25-17 victory on Sunday, putting an end to the two-time MVP's decade of dominance over the defending AFC champions.

Brady came in 6-1 all-time against the Steelers, putting up eye-popping numbers in the process. He never got the chance on a chilly day at Heinz Field. Pittsburgh (6-2) controlled the ball for nearly 39 minutes and never let Brady get into a sustained rhythm.

"It's been all Tom Brady versus the Pittsburgh Steelers and looking back on the past, how he's owned the Pittsburgh Steelers, and I think everybody forgot about our offense a little bit and the things they've been doing out there," Pittsburgh linebacker LaMarr Woodley said. "I think they took that a little personal."

Playing efficiently and working almost exclusively on short, safe, underneath routes, Roethlisberger completed 36 of 50 passes for 365 yards and two touchdowns as the Steelers won their fourth straight following a 2-2 start.

"We can be as good as we want to be," Roethlisberger said. "When we don't kill ourselves and stop ourselves, we can be pretty dangerous."

Brady passed for two touchdowns but threw for a season-low 198 yards. His attempt to lead the Patriots to an unlikely comeback ended when Pittsburgh's Brett Keisel sacked him, forcing a fumble that Troy Polamalu slapped through the end zone with 8 seconds left to provide the final margin.

"We all have to individually look in the mirror and figure out what we need to get better at," Brady said.

There was no sense of panic among the Patriots, who fell into a tie with Buffalo atop the AFC East. Yet the Steelers did something no team has been able to do this year: keep Brady under wraps.

Pittsburgh sacked him three times, held wide receiver Wes Welker ? on pace for an NFL record for yards receiving in a season ? to 39 yards on six receptions while limiting the Patriots to their fewest points since a 34-14 loss to Cleveland last year.

The Patriots punted four times, missed a field goal in the third quarter that would have drawn them within a touchdown and failed to recover an onside kick with just over 2 minutes remaining.

Not the kind of brisk execution that's been the hallmark of Brady and coach Bill Belichick's highly successful tenure.

"It just wasn't a really good day for us in any phase of the game, in any area," Belichick said. "We just didn't do a good enough job. That's really all there is to say."

Brady and Belichick remain tied with Don Shula and Dan Marino for most wins by a coach/quarterback tandem. Win No. 117 will have to wait at least a week after the Steelers emphatically awoke from an early-season slumber that included one-sided losses to Baltimore and Houston.

Pittsburgh didn't panic after the slow start. And while the Steelers weren't ready to declare they're back, there was a definite sense of vindication on a day that felt more like January than late October, and not just because of the chilly weather.

"It's a huge step," linebacker Lawrence Timmons said. "The New England Patriots have Belichick and Brady. This is a team that contends in the AFC every year and goes to the championship or the Super Bowl. So having this win, in our house, is huge and something to build on."

On both sides of the ball.

Roethlisberger has built a career and won two Super Bowls by chucking it deep with abandon. On Sunday he didn't complete a pass over 26 yards. He didn't have to.

Roethlisberger consistently found Antonio Brown (a career-high nine receptions), Heath Miller (a season-high seven grabs) and speedster Mike Wallace (seven catches) on short and intermediate routes.

The West Coast-style approach worked perfectly.

Pittsburgh's five scoring drives lasted 11, 16, 10, 14 and 11 plays. The Steelers converted 10 of 16 third downs and Shaun Suisham kicked three field goals.

"It's very frustrating," New England nose tackle Vince Wilfork said. "You talk about getting a team in second-and-longs and third-and-longs and taking advantage of those situations. We had them in those situations; we just didn't take advantage of them."

Despite being dominated for long stretches in the first half, the Patriots trailed just 17-10 at the break. Yet the magic Brady has been able to muster repeatedly against the Steelers throughout his career never appeared. On the same field where he won two AFC championships, Brady never really got comfortable.

"We had to beat them today," safety Ryan Clark said. "We're talking about this dominance that New England's had on us. I think we've won more Super Bowls, been to more Super Bowls than they have. It's not about history. We were excited to win today."

Notes: Woodley finished with two sacks to become the first Steeler to get multiple sacks in four consecutive games. ... New England RB Kevin Faulk ran for 32 yards on six carries and caught five passes for 20 yards in his first game of the season. ... Patriots lost for just the second time in their last 11 games coming off a bye and lost in October for just the seventh time since 2003. ... New England TE Rob Gronkowski set a career high with seven catches. ... The Steelers played without offensive captain Hines Ward and defensive captain James Farrior, who missed the game with injuries. ... New England defensive lineman Andre Carter had two sacks for the 11th time in his career.

New gaming website targets students | Albuquerque, N.M. | KRQE ...

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A new gaming website that allows college students to gamble online is about to launch on 160 campuses nationwide, including ' lobospokerclub.com ' for the University of New Mexico and ' newmexicopokerclub.com ' for New Mexico State University.

The College Poker Club is legal because gamers bet using "virtual" money.

"We're trying to position ourselves against those illegal offshore gambling websites that have been preying on students for years," said Chandler Bator, a junior from Arizona State University who created the website.

Players who pay the monthly $20 membership will have unlimited access to play poker and bet on sports games online with their "virtual" dollars. Each person will get $10,000 to gamble with. Bator said when gamers win enough Internet money, for example, by turning $10,000 virtual money into $50,000 of virtual money, they'll receive $100 in real cash.

"Once you reach certain thresholds of funny money, we're going to automatically give you, you'll earn real money," said Bator.

Bator also said top performers will also win cash prizes, paid out of the subscription fund. Each weekend, one member will also win a $10,000 seat at the World Series of Poker.

Bator hopes the College Poker Club will evolve into a social networking site where players can meet other students online and get their gambling fix legally.

"Our goal from the very beginning was to create a cohesive experience that would be equally engaging and alternative to these (illegal gambling) sites," said Bator.

Once the site launches in two weeks, Bator said they'll hire students from each campus to help with marketing.

But John Rinaldi, a gambling therapist with the New Mexico Council on Problem Gambling, said he worries feeding a fix might turn into a lifelong addiction.

"If I'm one of the gamblers, it gives the impression that I can win," said Rinaldi. "I can learn how to win so when I jump into real gambling, I'm an expert, I'm good."

Word of the Poker Club is spreading quickly on UNM's campus and students are excited.

"That's a really good idea," said sophomore Jeremy Baca. "I bet it will attract a lot of people."

UNM didn't want to comment on the College Poker Club because it wasn't familiar with it.

Detroit's Stafford works with first team

By NOAH TRISTER

updated 5:24 p.m. ET Oct. 27, 2011

ALLEN PARK, Mich. - Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford worked with the first team at practice Thursday, a sign of progress after he hurt his ankle last weekend.

"He has improved," coach Jim Schwartz said. "I think that he's on a pretty good track right now."

Stafford was limited Wednesday, but he looked comfortable a day later in the portion of practice open to reporters. He hurt his right ankle late in Sunday's 23-16 loss to Atlanta, hobbling off the field after a fourth down incompletion, but it was hard to tell how serious the injury was because the Lions never got the ball back after Stafford came off.

Detroit plays at Denver this Sunday. Stafford has completed 60 percent of his passes this season, for 1,912 yards with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions.

Although Schwartz was guarded with his optimism, and Stafford was listed as limited Thursday, wide receiver Nate Burleson was impressed with the quarterback's recovery.

"For anybody wondering if he's tough, he definitely is," Burleson said. "Today he took every single rep, so he's ready to rock."

Burleson said Stafford's ankle was black and blue on Wednesday, but he's participated in practice anyway.

"I was anticipating him not taking many reps this week, but in my mind right now, he's going to be out there on Sunday," Burleson said.

Stafford played in only three games last season because of shoulder problems, but he got off to a brilliant start this season, helping the Lions to a 5-0 record before they dropped their last two games. Backup Shaun Hill is preparing to play if Stafford can't.

Running back Jahvid Best (concussion) and rookie defensive lineman Nick Fairley (foot) did not practice Thursday. Fairley injured his left foot before the season, and he's played only three games.

"This would be his fourth preseason game," Schwartz said. "When you consider it that way ? a rookie, improved each game and then made some plays in each of the games that he played ? I think that we're happy with the track that he was on."

Baidu profit up 80 percent, forecasts more growth (AP)

BEIJING ? Baidu Inc., which operates China's most popular search engine, said Friday its latest quarterly profit jumped 80 percent as strong growth in usage of its site helped to drive advertising revenue higher.

Profit for the three months ended Sept. 30 was $295 million, or 84 cents per share, the Beijing-based company said. Revenue rose 85.1 percent to $654.7 million.

The company cited strong growth in user traffic and spending by advertising customers.

"Spending by large customers significantly outperformed our expectations," chairman and CEO Robin Li said in a statement.

The company forecast more strong growth, saying it expects revenues in the current quarter to rise by up to 85 percent.

Baidu has steadily increased its market share since Google Inc. closed its China search engine in March 2010 after saying it no longer wanted to cooperate with the communist Beijing government's censorship rules.

Baidu had a 75.9 percent market share in the three months ending in June, up from 64 percent in the first quarter of 2010, according to Analysys International, a research firm in Beijing. Google's share has declined from 30.9 percent to 18.9 percent but it still is well ahead of third-place Sogou, which has 2.4 percent.

China has the world's most populous Internet market with more than 485 million people online as of the end of June. Beijing encourages Web use for business and education but tries to block access to material deemed subversive or pornographic.

Baidu, long seen as a Google copycat, has launched a series of initiatives including a music download service to expand its appeal and differentiate its brand.

Peru quake destroys homes, injures dozens (AP)

LIMA, Peru ? Peruvian authorities say 134 homes have been destroyed and 103 people treated at hospitals for injuries in a 6.9-magnitude quake just off the central coast.

Civil defense chief Alfredo Murgueytio tells The Associated Press most of the collapsed homes were of adobe. He says two adobe churches are damaged and in danger of collapsing, including the 18th century cathedral of the provincial capital of Ica.

Friday's quake sent people running panicked into the streets in cities that were badly damaged four years earlier by a temblor that killed nearly 600 people.

At least nine aftershocks followed the Friday quake. The most significant had a 5.5 magnitude.

Democrats Propose $1.5 Trillion in New Taxes (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | With the statutory deadline approaching in less than a month, congressional Democrats still have their heads buried in the sand when it comes to the federal budget.

Reuters reported Thursday that the super committee Democrats introduced a $3 trillion savings package that aims to far exceed the $1.2 trillion they are required to cut before Thanksgiving. The plan was dead on arrival, according to Republican staffers for the ultra-secret committee.

Democrats seek $1.5 trillion in new revenues from tax increases and new taxes. What part of "no new taxes" do they not understand? The House is not going to pass any new revenues - they have been perfectly clear on that all year. For Dems to present a plan that calls for 50 percent of the proposed savings to come from new revenue is a waste of breath in proposing it, and a gallant waste of time should any committee give it debate time.

The proposal doesn't have the support of all Democrats on the special committee, and is likely to have problems with the Democratic leadership. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has repeatedly said she will not consider cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, although The Hill reports she is mum on the subject today wanting to "wait until I can see the whole package." That's an interesting comment from the former speaker who insisted the Congress pass Obamacare before they knew what was in the bill.

Nearly $100 billion in Medicaid cuts are proposed, as well as long term Medicare cuts. The details were carefully omitted from leaks to the media. The cream of the plan includes another $300 billion stimulus plan.

Basically, the Democrats are proposing massive tax hikes that cannot pass either chamber. They are proposing social program cuts that even their own leadership will not support, therefore effectively killing it in the Senate. And, they are proposing new stimulus spending that Republicans will not allow to happen. The time it took to design the plan was a further waste of government spending.

House Speaker John Boehner told Seattle Times that it would be difficult to pass any plan from the super committee, but he would strive to accomplish some compromise. The clock is ticking - the committee needs to get serious and make some concerted tough decisions. Then they need to muscle it past their respective caucuses.

Official convicted in West Virginia mine disaster

(AP) ? The only person prosecuted so far in the worst U.S. coal-mining disaster in decades was convicted Wednesday of lying to investigators probing the 2010 explosion that killed 29 men at the Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia.

It took jurors about six hours to find the mine's former security chief, Hughie Elbert Stover, guilty on the lying charge and a second count of seeking to destroy of thousands of security-related documents following the explosion. The jury had begun deliberating Wednesday morning after hearing two days of testimony, in which prosecutors painted Stover as an obstructionist and defense attorneys claimed he was a scapegoat.

Stover remains free pending a Feb. 29 sentencing hearing. Stover faces an estimated two years in prison on the record-disposal count alone. U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin said prosecutors will seek as stiff penalty as possible to deter such conduct.

"While we press forward with this investigation, we will not tolerate obstruction," Goodwin said.

No one else has been charged in the mine disaster. With both state and federal investigations ongoing, Goodwin said no potential criminal charges for others are off the table.

"There were serious matters that existed in this mine that didn't just happen overnight or without the involvement of individuals," he said.

Stover's attorney, William Wilmoth, said it was too early to discuss any future motions or appeals. "While we're disappointed at this result, we're very appreciative of their services," he said of the eight men and four women on the jury.

The defense had portrayed the former law enforcement officer, a veteran of both the Navy and Marines, as a by-the-book employee who became a victim of the government's zeal to blame someone for the deadly explosion.

"You wanted justice, and this is who they brought you," Wilmoth said during his closing argument.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Blaire Malkin had earlier reminded jurors of testimony from others at the Raleigh County underground mine. These witnesses alleged that Stover instructed mine guards to send out alerts by radio whenever inspectors entered the property. Such a practice is illegal. One of the criminal charges alleges Stover denied in a November 2010 interview with investigators that there were any advance warnings at the mine.

"This so-called by-the-book guy had his own playbook and terminology," Malkin said.

The other count alleges that Stover sought to destroy the documents the following January, by ordering a subordinate to bag and then throw them into an on-site trash compactor. Assistant U.S. Attorney Larry Ellis suggested to jurors Wednesday that those records would prove that Stover had lied about inspection tip-offs. The attempted disposal also violated repeated warning from the mine's then-owner, Massey Energy, to keep all records while the disaster remained under investigation. Massey officials told investigators of the trashed documents, which were recovered.

"There's too much at stake here," Ellis argued, while urging the jury to "send a message that this investigation ought to be allowed to go forward."

Wilmoth attributed Stover's November statements to confusion over evolving policies at the mine, run by Massey subsidiary Performance Coal Co. As for the document disposal, Stover had called that the "stupidest, worst mistake" of his life when he testified Tuesday in his defense.

Questioning criminal intent, Wilmoth said Stover could have burned, shredded or otherwise destroyed the records himself, instead of delegating the task of throwing them out to a subordinate during daylight hours and in front of a security camera. Prosecutors said the documents were dumped around 6 a.m., and after being placed in trash bags. Hauling them out in their cardboard storage boxes would have drawn notice, as would Stover performing the deed himself, prosecutors argued.

In urging jurors to acquit, Wilmoth argued that Stover's actions amounted to innocent mistakes, citing how several witnesses had described him as by-the-book and honest. Rather than targeting mine executives or engineers who may be at fault for the deadly blast, prosecutors have seized on Stover in a game of "government gotcha," Wilmoth told the jury.

"We're no closer to finding the real villain or villains behind this explosion," said Wilmoth, a former U.S. attorney. "Instead, this is what they brought you."

Three investigative reports issued so far on the disaster have each concluded that poorly maintained machines cutting into sandstone created a spark that ignited both a small amount of naturally occurring methane gas and a massive accumulation of explosive coal dust. Malfunctioning water sprayers allowed what could have been a small flare-up to become an epic blast that traveled seven miles of underground corridors, doubling back on itself and killing men instantly.

One of those reports was issued Tuesday by the United Mine Workers union, which criticized government regulators while slamming Massey. Labeling the disaster as "industrial homicide," the findings urge criminal charges against a number of then-executives at Massey. Alpha Natural Resources of Abingdon, Va., acquired the Richmond-based Massey in June through a $7.1 billion takeover deal.

Wall Street anxious on Europe, but no bets on disaster (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Wall Street may have become more anxious about the prospects of a solution to the euro zone debt crisis, but investors are not betting on disaster at Wednesday's European summit.

At least that's the case in the options market. Although Wall Street's so-called fear gauge, the CBOE Volatility Index VIX (.VIX), rose 10 percent on Tuesday, the move is not dramatic by recent standards.

The VIX rose as U.S. stocks fell 2 percent (.SPX) following the cancellation of a European financial ministers meeting, which spooked markets just 24 hours before European leaders are due to adopt a plan to resolve the crisis.

The 10 percent jump in the VIX on Tuesday is dwarfed by recent moves. The last time the S&P 500 fell 2 percent, on October 17, the VIX shot up by 20 percent.

And considering the S&P is up nearly 9 percent for the month, the drop in shares was also seen as relatively soft.

"The market is not so anxious ahead of tomorrow," said Randy Frederick, director of trading and derivatives at the Schwab Center for Financial Research in Austin, Texas.

PRICE GRAPH ON VIX

The VIX generally has an inverse relationship with the stock market as measured by the S&P 500. When the S&P moves lower, the VIX usually rises, but the VIX tends to move up at a much higher magnitude than the S&P moves down.

Equities had risen recently on hopes a resolution to Europe's sovereign debt crisis was on the horizon and a reduced likelihood of a U.S. recession after stronger-than-expected corporate results and economic data.

However, some say the market has managed its own expectations lower for a solution to Europe's problems.

"The market is realizing that this issue, which has been really building up for years, cannot be solved or improved that easily," said Joe Saluzzi, co-manager of trading at Themis Trading in Chatham, New Jersey.

Leicester fires ex-England coach Eriksson

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:56 p.m. ET Oct. 24, 2011

LEICESTER, England (AP) - Former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has been fired as manager of the second-tier club Leicester after just more than a year.

Eriksson spent heavily in the offseason in an attempt to meet the Thai owners' goal of returning to the Premier League. But Eriksson leaves with the team in 13th place in the League Championship after Saturday's 3-0 home defeat by Millwall.

The team said on its website it will begin its search for a new coach "in the coming days."

Eriksson managed Lazio and Benfica before leading England from 2001-06. Since then, he has also managed the English clubs Manchester City and Notts County as well as Mexico's national team.

Libya gives Gaddafi inglorious secret burial (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? Muammar Gaddafi and his son Mo'tassim were buried in a secret desert location on Tuesday, five days after the deposed Libyan leader was captured, killed and put on grisly public display.

"He (Gaddafi) has just been buried now in the desert along with his son," National Transitional Council (NTC) commander Abdel Majid Mlegta told Reuters by telephone.

Gaddafi's cleric, Khaled Tantoush, who was captured with him, prayed over the rotting bodies before they were taken from the compound in the coastal city of Misrata, where they had been on show, and handed to two NTC loyalists for burial, he said.

The NTC had worried many outsiders by displaying the corpses in a meat locker in the fiercely anti-Gaddafi city of Misrata until their decaying state forced them on Monday to call a halt.

Under pressure from Western allies, the NTC promised the same day to investigate how Gaddafi and his son were killed. Mobile phone footage shows both alive after their capture. The former leader was seen being mocked, beaten and abused before he died, in what NTC officials say was crossfire.

The saga has made Western allies of Libya's interim leadership queasy about the prospects for the rule of law and stable government in the post-Gaddafi era.

"I laughed when I saw him being beaten as he deserved to be. And I laugh again now that I know he is in the ground," said Emani Zaid, 20, a student in Tripoli. "If the men who buried him are true free Libyans, they can keep the secret (of his grave)."

Determined to prevent Gaddafi's grave from becoming a shrine for his supporters, the NTC wants to keep its location secret, refusing custody to his tribe, many of whom live in Sirte.

The prayers for the dead were attended by two of Gaddafi's cousins, Mansour Dhao Ibrahim, once leader of the feared People's Guard, and Ahmed Ibrahim. Both were captured with him after a NATO air strike hit a convoy of vehicles trying to break out of Sirte, Gaddafi's home town, just after it fell.

"The NTC officials were handed the body after the sheikh completed the early morning ceremony and are taking him somewhere very far away into the desert," Mlegta said.

"THROW HIM IN A HOLE"

For Ali Azzarog, 47, an engineer, it was good riddance.

"Throw him in a hole, in the sea, in garbage. No matter. He is lower than a donkey or a dog and only foreigners say they care about how we killed him. And they are lying," he said.

Mohammed al-Sharif, a 22-year-old describing himself as an aspiring writer, said: "Let the dust of the desert sweep over the hole where he was buried ... Then the name 'Muammar' can be forgotten and our children will never know of this time."

Libyans rose up against Gaddafi's 42-year rule in February, defying a violent response that was parried by NATO air power under a United Nations mandate to protect civilians.

The 69-year-old strongman's death ended eight months of war that had dragged on in Sirte and elsewhere even after the NTC's ragtag militias captured the capital, Tripoli, in August.

Hatred of Gaddafi unified his disparate opponents, who may now tussle for power during a planned transition to democracy in a broken nation with regional and tribal rivalries to overcome.

"Leaders from different regions, cities, want to negotiate over everything -- posts in government, budgets for cities, dissolving militias," said one senior NTC official in Tripoli, though he defended this as a healthy expression of freedom.

At times, Gaddafi's body appeared to have become a macabre bargaining chip for Misrata, which endured a pitiless war-time siege, and whose leaders now demand a big say in the new Libya.

Fears that Gaddafi's sons might wage an Iraq-style insurgency have faded since the deaths of Mo'tassim and his brother Khamis, a military commander, who was killed earlier.

But well-armed fighters in the former Gaddafi stronghold of Bani Walid, which fell to the NTC this month, told Reuters they were planning to keep up their struggle.

"MASS EXECUTION"

Abuses apparently committed by both sides in the civil war may also impede reconciliation. New York-based Human Rights Watch urged the NTC on Monday to probe an "apparent mass execution" of 53 people, apparently Gaddafi loyalists, whom it found dead, some with their hands bound, at a Sirte hotel.

In Tripoli, a 33-year-old waiter, who said he was too scared to give his name, praised what he said was Gaddafi's courage.

"If you say Gaddafi died like a coward, you are wrong. He died proud like a lion. He said he would never leave Libya and he did not leave. Fight, fight, fight. I was not a Gaddafi supporter before this revolution but when I saw his bravery, I knew he was the only man for Libya," he said.

One of Gaddafi's sons, the enigmatic Saif al-Islam, remains on the run. Once viewed as a moderate reformer, Saif vowed to help his father crush his enemies once the revolt began.

An NTC official said Saif al-Islam was in the remote southern desert near Niger and Algeria and was set to flee Libya using a false passport.

He said Gaddafi's former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi who, like Saif al-Islam, is wanted by the International Criminal Court, was involved in the escape plan.

"The region is very difficult to monitor and encircle," the official said of Saif al-Islam's purported whereabouts.

In Niger, there was no official comment on Saif al-Islam, but the government there has repeatedly signaled it would fulfill its responsibilities to the International Criminal Court which wants to try Gaddafi's son for crimes against humanity.

"The instructions in Niger are very clear: if this son of Gaddafi enters Niger, he must be arrested and placed immediately in the hands of the authorities because there is an international arrest warrant for him," a Nigerien military source said.

Gaddafi's death allowed the NTC to declare Libya's "liberation" on Sunday in Benghazi, the seat of the revolt.

NTC Chairman Mustafa Abdel Jalil also announced that Libya had "taken Islamic sharia as the source of legislation."

Many rejoicing Libyans brushed off unease among human rights groups and Western capitals about the manner of Gaddafi's death.

Until the public was finally denied access on Monday, fighters were still ushering sightseers into the chilled room where the bodies of Gaddafi, Mo'tassim and his former army chief lay, their flesh darkening and leaking fluids.

The U.N. human rights arm has joined the Gaddafi family in seeking an inquiry into his killing. The NTC promised one on Monday, saying most Libyans had hoped to see Gaddafi on trial.

Some Libyans are also uncomfortable at the way Gaddafi was killed and his body treated.

"I regret it, really," said lawyer Sawani Ghanem, 30, adding that Gaddafi had tainted Libya as a land of terrorists. "We should have tried to show the world we could be more humane and aspire to change."

Offense, anyone?

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Strolling behind the batting cage, Matt Holliday watched his St. Louis teammates hit away Friday and offered a simple tip.

"Get a good swing!" he hollered.

Great advice for anyone with a Louisville Slugger in hand at this World Series.

Despite the presence of Josh Hamilton, Albert Pujols, Nelson Cruz and other top boppers, the Cardinals and Texas Rangers have hardly dented the scoreboard while splitting the first two games.

So far, a total of just eight runs. The last time there were fewer through the opening two games at a Series? Try 1950, when Joe DiMaggio and the New York Yankees combined with Philadelphia for four.

"A lot of people thought this was going to be an offensive World Series," Texas shortstop Elvis Andrus observed before an off-day workout.

Blame the drought on a few factors: raw weather at Busch Stadium, good pitching and, perhaps most significantly, hitters facing arms they've never seen before.

Both teams have flailed away at the plate, chasing sliders and curves that bounced, shattering bats and seeming to guess wrong on what pitches were coming next.

"We need to give good at-bats and get deeper and quit swinging at balls out of the strike zone," Mike Napoli said.

Napoli has hit the lone home run of the Series. He connected off Chris Carpenter, but maybe he had an edge - Napoli had been 3 for 3 lifetime against the Cardinals ace going into Game 1.

Fresh off their two-run rally in the ninth inning and a 2-1 win in Game 2, the Rangers start Matt Harrison on Saturday night at Rangers Ballpark. Kyle Lohse will pitch for the Cardinals.

"It's a tough place to pitch, especially when you see those flags blowing in. It usually means that jet stream is going to right-center," Lohse said. "I think everyone in the league knows that."

Each team adds a designated hitter, with the AL rule in effect at Texas. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa will make Lance Berkman the DH and put Allen Craig - already with a pair of key pinch-hit RBI singles - in right field.

The Rangers will likely use Michael Young at DH, move Napoli to first base and put Yorvit Torrealba at catcher.

At this point, it might take more than a wind tunnel to help the hitters.

Texas is batting only .186, St. Louis is stuck at .203. Hamilton and Pujols are hitless, and Cruz has been held to a mere single after tearing through the AL championship series.

On Friday, Cruz gave the Hall of Fame the bat he used to hit a grand slam in the ALCS. It was cracked - maybe Texas and St. Louis need new timber, too.

It seemed fitting, in fact, that when Texas scored those two runs Thursday night to even the Series, both crossed on sacrifice flies.

Each team has scored four runs overall. Back in 1983, Baltimore and Philadelphia also combined for eight through two games - it's more than 60 years since the total was lower than this October.

"I think honestly we got out of our approach a little bit, maybe a little over aggressive trying to create things that necessarily weren't there," said Ian Kinsler, whose bloop single and daring steal keyed the Texas comeback. "If we can just relax and play our style of baseball, let the game come to us, we'll be all right."

Rangers outfielder David Murphy hopes it plays out that way, eventually.

"It's the World Series. We're going to face a guy tomorrow that most of us have never faced, if at all. Game 4 is a little different because Edwin Jackson has been in the American League enough to where most of us have probably faced him," he said.

"I feel like just watching the first two games, offensively, it's just a matter of who is going to make adjustments on the fly. We're facing their guys that we've never before and it's the same thing on their side. The pitching performances have been good, but we have confidence in our offense to put up runs, as well," he said.

So does Texas hitting coach Scott Coolbaugh. He was promoted from the Triple-A job when Thad Bosley was fired two months into his first year with the team.

Coolbaugh watched Young swing through strike three from Jaime Garcia in Game 2, then saw Adrian Beltre wave at a couple of low off-speed deliveries.

"I think it was evident that some of our guys were seeing someone for the first time," Coolbaugh said. "You can watch all the video you want and read all the scouting reports. But when you step into that batter's box, it all looks different."

Coolbaugh, however, was not surprised when the Rangers put together better at-bats in the ninth against Jason Motte and the St. Louis bullpen.

"That was two days in a row that we were seeing their relievers. The more we see them, the better off we'll be," he said.

What Impact Could Gaddafi's Death Have on Arab Spring Unrest?

The execution of Col. Muammar Gaddafi earlier this week closes one chapter on Libya?s version of the ?Arab Spring? movement. Where the country goes from here, and what the other members of the movement learn from the overthrow of Gaddafi, is likely, however, to be the more difficult part of the story. Now that NATO has ostensibly achieved its goal in Libya, some Syrians are calling for international backing to their efforts to oust President Bashar al-Assad. Others question whether Gaddafi?s violent end, which leaves no opportunity to hold him accountable for four decades of oppressive rule, will quell the chaos that has enveloped that country for the past several months.

As Ed Husain, a senior fellow for Middle Eastern Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, noted in a New York Times column Thursday, that Gaddafi?s death provides clues to ?the real risks of chaos and extremism? that could spread throughout the Middle East and North Africa. ?Democracy is about much more than removal of dictators and elections,? he wrote. ?The rule of law, due process, human rights and the vital need for a democratic culture is yet to emerge in the region.? Particularly troubling, he added, was the way Gaddafi?s body has been handled and the mobile-phone recording of his capture and, later, his corpse. What will Libyan?s learn from Gaddafi?s rise, rule and fall?

Gaddafi?s death does, of course, offer one example of what happens to leaders who appear to lose their grip on reality, believing that they are still supported by their people and blaming outsiders for stirring rebellion. Speaking to Scientific American in August as Gaddafi?s power was slipping away, Jerrold Post, a professor of psychiatry, political psychology and international affairs, and director of the Political Psychology Program at George Washington University, said, ?It?s quite clear that the rebels are in control, but things will not really be fully clarified until Gaddafi is either killed, forced to surrender when there?s no one left around him or goes down in a blaze of bullets.? Clarity, unfortunately, will have to wait at least a little while longer.

Gaddafi became the second Middle Eastern dictator to escape accountability through death, after the equally hectic execution of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in December 2006. The process of holding Gaddafi accountable could have played an important role in Libya?s reconciliation, Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi, a writer about Arab issues in the United Arab Emirates and a nonresident fellow at the Dubai School of Government, wrote in The New York Times on Thursday. It remains to be seen what impact the trial of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will have on that country?s fortunes.

Gaddafi?s death suggests some parallels between his legacy and that of another famously anti-American leader?Osama bin Laden?both of whom became victims of revenge. Their deaths seem to satisfy not just the need to right a wrong?they also provide individuals with a measure of relief as well as a means of deterrence of future harm. ?[Revenge is] designed to deter individuals from imposing costs on you in the future after that individual has imposed costs on you in the first place,? Michael McCullough, a psychology professor and director of the Evolution and Human Behavior Laboratory at the University of Miami, told Scientific American following the killing of bin Laden in May.

Some speculate that Gaddafi?s end could re-invigorate remnants of the Arab Spring in Syria, Yemen and elsewhere. As Reuters reported, some Syrian demonstrators have been heard shouting, ?Gaddafi is finished. It is your turn now Bashar!? Yet Syria?s situation is quite different from Libya?s, cautions Shadi Hamid, director of research at the Brookings Doha Center and a fellow at the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution. As Hamid pointed out in The New York Times, more Syrians have been entertaining the notion of not only violent resistance, but of imposed no-fly zones, arms transfers, safe havens and even ground troops. ?The Libya model is only really relevant to the extent that it can be replicated, and it is unclear that it can,? he added.

In the end, Libyans must live with the outcome of their revolt against Gaddafi. Rime Allaf, a Syrian writer and an associate fellow at Chatham House in London, wrote recently in the Times that the best way for them to do this for ?NATO to withdraw immediately and for the U.S. and its allies to back off in word and in deed.?

Novel therapeutic target identified to decrease triglycerides and increase 'good' cholesterol

ScienceDaily (Oct. 20, 2011) ? Researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center have announced findings published in the October 20 issue of Nature that show for the first time the inhibition of both microRNA-33a and microRNA-33b (miR-33a/b) with chemically modified anti-miR oligonucleotides markedly suppress triglyceride levels and cause a sustained increase in high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) "good" cholesterol.

"The discovery of microRNAs in the last decade has opened new insights for up new avenues for the development of therapies targeted at these potent regulators of gene pathways," said lead author Kathryn Moore, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Medicine, The Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology and The Marc and Ruti Bell Vascular Biology and Disease Program at NYU Langone Medical Center. "The current study is the first to show that inhibition of miR-33a, as well as miR-33b which is only found in larger mammals can suppress plasma triglyceride levels and increase circulating levels of HDL-C. This study highlights the benefits of modulating miR-33a/b and its downstream metabolic pathways for the treatment of conditions that increase cardiovascular disease risks, such as dyslipidemias and metabolic syndrome."

Metabolic syndrome is a combination of medical disorders that increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Cholesterol is a growing public concern worldwide characterized by an increase in triglycerides, decrease in plasma HDL-C, obesity and resistance to insulin that can lead to both cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Recent studies have indicated miR-33a/b regulate genes involved in cholesterol and fatty acid metabolism pathways. miR-33a/b strongly represses the cholesterol transporter ABCA1, resulting in decreased generation of HDL-C and reverse cholesterol transport. In addition, miR-33a/b also inhibit key genes involved in fatty acid metabolism resulting in the accumulation of triglycerides. The ability to inhibit miR-33a/b to reverse these events provides a novel therapeutic approach to correct dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome.

"This study represents a significant advance from our proof-of-concept studies in mice showing that anti-miR-33 can both raise HDL and improve existing atherosclerotic vascular disease," said Katey Rayner, PhDin the Department of Medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center and co-author of the study. "These exciting results now bring the use of miR-33 inhibitors one step closer to the clinic."

Android Ice Cream Sandwich: What will it look like on a tablet? (video)

Is there such a thing as too much Ice Cream Sandwich? We didn't think so either, and booted up Google's own Android Emulator to play around with version four-point-oh -- in tablet proportions. We don't know whether manufacturers will end up slathering their own interpretation of Ice Cream Sandwich on top of the vanilla original, but this is probably very close to what we'll be dealing with when it arrives on tablets sometime this quarter. Scrollable, resizeable widgets are here, as is a tabbed, synchronizing web browser.

There are some minor niggles; we hope they'll make some adjustments to the comically over-sized native keyboard, but the main thing we took away from this stuttering simulation is that the UI is nigh-on identical to what we were using on the Galaxy Nexus. Android looks like it has any future convergence issues in order -- this version will feel at home on both your phone and tablet. Android Beam has never sounded better. If you can forgive the low-performance emulation, check out the video after the break for more Ice Cream Sandwich, king-size.

PFT: Andre Johnson might miss 6 weeks

Houston Texans v Miami DolphinsGetty Images

Said former Bills coach Marv Levy of the death of Kent Hull, ?Of all 47 years of my coaching career, this was one of the most memorable guys I ever had the honor to coach. I?m so sad to hear it. He was a great leader, certainly. He was as likable a guy as you could meet, family-oriented, a great citizen. I?m stunned.?

Dolphins LB Jason Taylor was at a loss for words when asked about the team?s struggles.

Patriots RB Kevin Faulk is able to practice for the first time since tearing his ACL more than a year ago, but he?s not getting too excited about it.

Jets coach Rex Ryan was surprised to learn that his team is the underdog against the Chargers.

Bernard Pollard says he?s the best dancer on the Ravens.

Engineering the Carson Palmer trade is being described as Mike Brown?s finest hour.

Despite talk that RB Peyton Hillis could be traded, the Browns say they wouldn?t trade him and got no calls about it.

Said Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, ?I think it?s very obvious that we?ve performed to a winning level at home. We haven?t done so on the road. We understand that if we want to be a contender, be a winning team, a January-type team, we have to perform better on the road than we have.?

Texans DE Tim Jamison had his best game on Sunday, but he says he?s not satisfied.

Colts S Antoine Bethea reflects on the season without Peyton Manning: ?It?s not all peaches and cream. It?s football, man. We?ve been blessed here to have some good years, but this is the other side of it. We?ve got to fight our way through it, keep our heads high. Eventually it?ll turn around.?

The Eagles are crediting some changes to the defensive game plan for their win over the Redskins.

Said Redskins WR Terrence Austin of getting his first catch, ?It felt real good. I?m always trying to make a play, trying to help out the team the best way I can, and I just want to show I?m able to do that. Whenever the guys need a breather, I want to show that I?m able to do that and help the team.?

Bears coach Lovie Smith is accentuating the positive: ?I am pretty happy where we are, it?s not an ideal position starting the season, but where we are right now with a big win, things look like they are headed in the right direction. I like the direction we are going.?

Fewer Than Half of Kids Hurt in Car Crashes Wearing Seat Belts (HealthDay)

SATURDAY, Oct. 15 (HealthDay News) -- Fewer than half of U.S. children injured in car crashes between 2002 and 2006 were wearing seat belts, and minority children had the lowest rates of seat-belt use, a new study finds.

Researchers examined data on car accidents involving nearly 40,000 children under age 16 and found that 47.5 percent were restrained. Black, Hispanic and Native American children had the lowest rates of seat-belt use.

The overall death rate among the children was nearly 6 percent and the injury rate was nearly 7 percent. Of the children who were injured, nearly 13 percent required emergency surgery.

The researchers also found that seat-belt use was associated with a lower injury severity score (ISS) and that a higher ISS was associated with a greater risk of emergency surgery, severe outcomes, longer hospital stay and death.

The study was slated for presentation Oct. 15 at the American Academy of Pediatrics' national meeting in Boston.

Because this study was presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

"After adjusting for the use of restraints, we found no differences in mortality among different ethnic groups. The major determinant of both morbidity and mortality is the severity of the injury as quantified by the initial injury severity score," lead author Dr. Rebecca Stark said in an academy news release. "Because the use of restraints decreases the ISS, we feel our results highlight the need for further education and outreach to the pediatric population about the benefit of seat-belt use."

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among children in the United States.
