(CNN) ?

A grenade flew into a Kenyan church Sunday, turning a prayer service into carnage.

The attack in Garissa, a city in northeastern Kenya, killed at least one person and wounded at least 13 others. At least two are in critical condition. It was the latest in a slew of similar attacks in the country.

"There were people seriously injured lying on the floor when we got to the church," said Nelly Muluka, spokeswoman for the Kenya Red Cross. "Garissa hospital is desperately in need of blood," she added.

Witnesses said members of the Islamist militant group al-Shabaab were involved, Muluka said.

These kinds of attacks have escalated since Kenyan forces invaded neighboring Somalia last year to battle al-Shabaab, blaming it for kidnappings of foreigners in the nation.

One attack in September struck a Sunday school class, killing a child and wounding several others.
