Digging Insight Elements of Computer Support | Computer Hardware

[Recorded: May 9, 1963] This vintage film features MIT Science Reporter John Fitch at the MIT Computation Center in an extended interview with MIT professor of computer science Fernando J. Corbato. The film was co-produced by WGBH (Boston) and MIT. The prime focus of the film is timesharing, one of the most vital developments in computing, and one which has come in and out of favor several times over the last several decades as the dichotomy between remote and centrally-managed computing resources played out; the latest incarnation for centrally-managed computing resources is known as cloud computing. Timesharing as shown in this film, was a novel concept in the early 1960s. Driven by a desire to more efficiently use expensive computer resources while increasing the interactivity between user and computer (man and machine), timesharing was eventually taken up by industry in the form of special timesharing hardware for mainframe and minicomputer computer systems as well as in sophisticated operating systems to manage multiple users and resources. Corbato describes how after the mid-1950s, when computers started to become reliable, the next huge challenge to improve productivity and efficiency was the development of computer languages, FORTRAN being an example. One of the next bottlenecks in computing, according to Corabto, was the traditional batch processing method of combining many peoples computer jobs into one large single job for the computer to process at one time ?

Computer technology has transformed the world, and its significance is apparently visible in every walk of life. What was not possible in days is now possible in minutes. Job that required effort of hundreds of people can now be accomplished by a single person. It?s the technology that fosters us to explore the universe, and make new benchmark in every field. If today I say it?s coming closer to us, then it would be somewhat incorrect, rather than I should say that we are soaked in technology from top to toes across all breadth and length of life. Let?s take example of Basis Band that received the innovation award at the Consumer Electronic Shows 2012, Las Vegas in the health and fitness category. A user just needs to wear this as a wrist watch, and it will monitor the activities related to the heart, brain, blood-sugar, oxygen level in blood, etc. and come up with a broad and simple-to-know report that will translate his/her health quotient. The device uploads the evaluation sheet to user account in cloud via a Bluetooth, and pretty similar as software is updated, the device stays updated with the latest technologies. Face book with about 900 million and growing customer base has brought the revolution in social life of a person, community, nation, and as a whole of the planet. Hence, it won?t be an exaggeration by saying that it has become the ?Blood-Life? of all.

When something is so much vital, then there must be a proper system to look after it. Indeed we have a discipline of computer technical support, and fortunately the inception of remote technology and the Internet has carried it to every PC, laptop, net book, tablet, Smartphone and gadget? user. People don?t need to walk out to any repair shop or service center. What they need is to call on the helpline number of a service provider to avail of the support services. Experts can diagnose ailing machines over the Internet, comprehend the causes of a problem and troubleshoot that instantly at the comfort of users? home or office. If computing device is in warranty period then service providers won?t charge anything for their service.

Novices may find it something unusual as how a person sitting at a remote place can fix computer problems, but yes, it?s a fact. And individuals and businesses are making use of it to simplify various software and hardware related ditches to make max of the technology. As a part of making excellent relationship with consumers, manufacturers also come up with their limited hardware warranty. Under this, visiting, parts and labor costs are bore by them only. Stepping forward some vendors like HP, Dell, and Acer have also included accidental protection program as a part of computer support that safeguards consumers? investment against accidents like liquid spill, electronic surge, drop and other cases where hardware components get hurt. In these cases, either engineer will provide a PC repair service or will get users? machine replaced with a new one. Understanding the globalization prospect vendors are also offering international warranty support and protection from lost and theft.

Hence, consumers are on much safer side than ever before. Comprehensive computer help services empower them to go the extra mile to achieve their dreams.
