All of us have a running commentary in our head. If you are prone to negative chatter it can affect your mood, self-esteem, and even your life choices. Here are 5 tips to start counteracting the background chatter in your head of ?criticizing yourself, worry, and insecurity.

#1 Journal

Get a journal and for the next 2 weeks start writing down any negative commentary that runs through your head (Examples ?I?m an idiot, I can?t believe I said that? ??I?m no good at this?). Journaling increases your awareness of how you talk to yourself.

#2 Thought Stopping

I tell my patents when they are aware of negative thoughts in their head they should visualize a big red stop sign. This helps interrupt the negative thought pattern.

#3 The rubber band technique

Wear ?a rubber band around your wrist. Whenever a negative thought comes into your head, snap the rubber band. The minor sting draws your attention away from your negativity.

#4 Replace negative thoughts with positive

Every time you are aware of a negative thought, such as ?I suck at this?, replace it with a positive thought, ?I am going to meet this challenge and give it my best try.?

#5 Positive Affirmations

Positive affirmations is a wonderful way to transform your thinking and develop a positive attitude in life. It is also an excellent technique to get rid of self-limiting beliefs. If you can learn to have faith in yourself, you can accomplish anything.
